Symptoms of Female Heart Attack - Which Are They?
By Ken Mark
It's not a very well known topic, but there are some specific symptoms of female heart attack. It's important to be able to notice these symptoms in order for you to act fast and get the medical help as soon as possible. Remember that every minute counts and the faster you get help, the more likely it is for you to survive the attack.
First of all you should know that women still suffer from many of the chest related attack signs that also show up in men:
There are common reports of feeling tightness in chest, which can move on to feeling acute pain and pressure. This feeling may also appear in your jaw, shoulders or neck.
Along with this discomfort, there are also some very common reports of feeling lightheaded, or like one's fainting.
Symptoms like sweating, starting to get nauseated and having to gasp for air are also some very common symptoms of heart failure.
However, even though the above symptoms are also common in women, many of them don't appear. And that includes chest pain! Yes, in fact, some studies have been reporting that there are almost half of the women suffering from an attack that don't feel any chest pain at all. This can be worrying as it makes the female heart attack symptoms much harder to detect.
Symptoms of Female Heart Attack - Is Chest Pain Still Relevant?
Even though it's a symptom that almost half the women don't feel, it is in fact the symptom that alerts most doctors in an emergency room. Only a rather small minority of doctors will check for some other symptoms that are common in women. This is a problem as there are many doctors that may miss a heart failure in women because of that.
It's been an effort among cardiologists to inform people that even though chest tightness is still a very important symptom to determine the occurrence of a heart attack, it's not the only one and it's important to raise awareness over some other symptoms that occur almost just as often (in women). Another problem that also occurs with men is that people tend to think that the symptoms are related to something other than a heart failure. Symptoms like having some shortness of breath, some fatigue that they can't explain and even pressure occurring in the lower chest is something that many are still taking as being a simple stomach ailment. The problem is that only when the symptoms start to become worse you'll look for medical help and that is sometimes too late.
So, Which Are the Symptoms of Female Heart Attack?
There are some symptoms that are constantly reported, related to a women cardiovascular disease that leads to cardiac arrest:
Over 50% of women are reporting shortage of breath, making it the most common symptom of a heart attack.
Also over 50% of women feel an unexpected weakness and need to rest immediately. This is natural, as your body isn't getting the oxygen it needs.
Fatigue is also a very commonly symptom, and one that usually appears even when there are no apparent reasons.
Nausea is another very common symptom that a lot of women have reported, along with dizziness.
Feeling a slight discomfort in your lower chest is another very common symptom, along with abdominal pressure (sometimes just a slight discomfort) that many women confuse with indigestion.
And finally, there's back pain.
All of these symptoms of female heart attack are important to be known for people not to confuse them with other conditions that may lead to getting medical care too late.
