Things to Keep in Mind when Publishing an eBook

Things to Keep in Mind when Publishing an eBook

Author: saurabh

Whether converting your ebook to the ePub format or for the Kindle, following are the basic parts of ebook creation workflow:

  • Creation: There are multiple ways of creating an ePub file. The one to start with comes from your existing workflow, level of skills, budget level, time available for training and of course, the origination of your content.
  • Unzipping: An ePub file is essentially a zipped folder (even pptx is!) made of numerous files for specific purposes. Hence, it must be unzipped before editing can start unless an editing software allows editing without unzipping.
  • Editing: There is, unfortunately, no single sure-shot way of exporting or creating an ePub file that does not require hand manipulation to fix errors or improve the final design.
  • Zipping: This step essentially re-combines the numerous files inside an ePub file so that it can be accepted by an eRetailer like Amazon, Nook.
  • Validation: In order for an eRetailer to accept an ePub, it must pass its tests ie validation points. The validation process helps to pinpoint errors in coding, so it's useful to validate a file at many points during editing.
  • Converting: Convert from ePub to Kindle format (or even vice-versa): ePub and the Kindle formats are NOT the same (though some novices like to believe that). You can use one for the starting point of building the other; however, conversion is just the first step towards final validation. There are manual coding adjustments that need made whenever moving between these formats.
  • Testing: As goes without saying, the final step in all ePub workflow use-cases is top quality control. Testing an ePub file thoroughly on as many different eReader devices, software and apps as possible in order to review your product from a UI (user interface), and UX (user experience) perspective.
  • For more clarity on the topic: eBooks are books that are electronic in form and downloadable easily accessible through eReader devices and platforms, like the Apple iPad®, Barnes & Noble NOOK, and your tablet. Millions of readers find new ways to read eBooks everyday which they purchase online. By publishing your own eBook, you are entering the great world of new age publishing with your own very unique mark- knowledge and ideas with readers all over the world - anywhere, anytime, without any borders.

While an e-book reader costs much more than one book, the electronic texts are at times cheaper. Moreover, a great share of e-books are available online for free, minus the minimal costs of the electronics required. For example, all fiction from before the year 1900 is in the public domain. Also, libraries lend more current e-book titles for limited times, free samples are available of many publications, and there are other lending models being piloted as well. E-books can be printed for less than the price of traditional new books using new on-demand book printers.
