Organic Chicken - The Perfectly Versatile Meal Choice

Organic Chicken - The Perfectly Versatile Meal Choice

By Zoe D Robinson

There is more than one reason why chicken is a key ingredient in a huge variety of dishes in wildly different cuisines around the world. If you worry about eating too much red meat, you find it too expensive, or you do not like the taste, chicken is a really good alternative. Chicken is lower in saturated fat and cholesterol than red meat, and a better source of protein than vegetarian alternatives such as beans, plus it is usually significantly cheaper than red meat and other white meats such as pork. On top of all of this though, chicken has to be one of the most flexible ingredients readily available to us in the British Isles.

Everything from curries, breaded drumsticks, barbecues, and roasts to stews, soups, pies, or fajitas lend themselves at least as much to chicken as other meats, but it is much easier and more common to use chicken in salads, sandwiches, and to dress it up like in chicken Kiev, coq au vin, bacon wrapped chicken breast or peanut satay skewers. Whatever kind of food you are making, and sauce or marinade that you are using - Chinese, French, Cajun, Mexican - chicken is easily adaptable, very tasty, and a smart choice to use. It lends itself perfectly to any number of global flavours.

Chicken probably already is one of the staples of your regular diet for just these reasons. But if you are buying chicken for the health benefits or the taste, it pays to go one step further and buy organic chicken. As well as chicken's natural virtues, organic chicken is free from antibiotics and growth hormones, it is only fed on organic feed and has to be free range and cleanly kept.

As well as being more humane this limits the chances of disease; happier, less-stressed animals, and animals not kept in cramped and dirty conditions are less prone to illness and disease, which is especially important in organic animals since they are not filled with a steady supply of antibiotics. Producers of organic chicken have to consider renewable resources and conservation, so it is more environmentally friendly. The taste is noticeably superior to poorer quality chickens. You and your family cannot fail to enjoy the full flavour and texture of the poultry, but you will enjoy it all the more knowing that it is purer and not harmful to your body, and better for the environment too.
