Prepare Your Winter Wildlife Garden

There are an astronomical number of tasks in the garden as winter approaches. As the growing season nears its end it's time to harvest in the vegetable garden and allotment, clear beds out of their summer growth, and pile on the manure for the following season. There's even a bit of sowing to be done, and you can start popping in broad beans, onions and garlic at this time of the year. Meanwhile, in my own ornamental garden life is in full swing and there's still plenty of flowers. However, with cold weather looming and leaves starting to pile up, it's vital to get out and do a garden cleanup. But, whilst we're chopping and trimming and composting, try and remember that wildlife also need a little help during this season.

Composting is an important part of my garden, and most of the life force for plants comes from recycled plant waste and sporadic lashings of chicken manure. Digging and spreading out your heap is a great winter job, not only because your time isn't taken up with plants but also that the winter frosts help get into the compost and manure and break it down, leaching nutrients down into the soil. Whilst you should wait until the depths of winter to spread muck, it's a good idea to dig out your compost heap before the cold weather starts. Millions of bugs, along with hedgehogs and amphibians may well use your warm compost heap as a hibernation spot, and the last thing you want to do is disturb them when bitter temperatures are in the air - something which could kill them. So, if you're digging out composts, do it now. Even if you don't want to spread yet, you can keep garden ready compost in bins whilst restacking your heap as a hibernation home.

Seeds are predominant at this time of year, and though much garden foliage is dead and looking as if it needs to be cut back, certain seed pods are perfect for birds. As you're cutting back herbaceous plants think of the birds, and leave certain species until the spring. Japanese anemones and golden rod are just two plants which create thousands of seeds which may be enjoyed by finches throughout the bitter months. Meanwhile, though berries may be everywhere, it's often tempting to have a good cut back of bushes and shrubs to trim them into shape. Hold off if you can, allow birds to first strip the plants of berries and get all the goodness they can before you start hacking.

Pond clearing and covering is also a job which is often done as the winter draw nears. As leaves fall it's vital to stop them turning a beautiful, transparent pond into a dank and stagnant leaf filled tip. However, if you're covering ponds over which you know are often utilised by local wildlife as a water source, provide an alternative place for them to quench their thirst by offering a saucer of water.

Leaves are one of autumn's most iconic features, with deciduous trees losing their foliage in a fluffy of crimson and fiery tones. For OCD-ridden gardeners, clearing every single one away into compost heaps or plastic bags for leaf mulch is the challenge, but give a thought to the wildlife. Whilst you shouldn't let leaves suffocate in borders and on lawns, a few leaves do not do any harm and you'll find worms pulling them down into the ground. Meanwhile, a fine layer of leaves are the perfect protection of small animals scurrying around at the back of flower beds.

So, as you go about your gardening, keep in mind that creatures over the coming months will need a helping hand if they are to survive one of the toughest times of years. And by not being quite as tidy, and by changing our routine, we'll provide the perfect garden larder and winter retreat for our wildlife friends.

Depending on the activity involved you need to consider one of two prongs: (1) Knowledge Base and (2) Skill Level. For hobbies in the first category, the valuation is focused on the dedication to the activity as it provides an extensive knowledge base. For example, someone who collects rare stamps does not necessarily require a specific skill set. However, the dedication in collecting the rare finds may grant a certain status of connoisseur. Some of the hobbies that may fall in the latter category may include cooking, dancing or singing. The assessment for these hobbies will be skilled based on a scale of 1 to 10.

It is important to be honest with yourself in the valuation process. This should not be seen as an opportunity to turn "the thing that were never good at", but chose to do anyway into a business. Now, let's put it to the test. Grab a pen and pad, list all your hobbies and number them accordingly. From this list, create a second list. This time enumerate the hobbies in the order of the Skill Level. For knowledge base hobbies, consider this example as guideline. Suppose John collects baseball cards and stamps. In order to properly evaluate, John would count the number of cards collected in each category. The number of items collected will be indicative of his skill and familiarity with authentic baseball cards or stamps. If John has 10 unique stamps compared to 500 baseball cards. Collecting baseball cards will be No. 1 on the list and collecting stamps will be No. 2.

Value Time Spent

The Second step is understanding how much time is spent on each hobby. This will include time spent participating in the hobby, as well preparation time and any other time spent promoting and promulgating that interest. The time spent will also allow you to gauge your dedication to each hobby proportionately. This may require you to take some time to figure out how much time you routinely spend per activity. Once you have an accounting of time spent, you are now ready to go back to the second list you made based on the Skill Set valuation. Now, next to each hobby write down the time spent. You may notice that you spend more time on the hobby that is near the top of list. If that is the case, it may be a confirmation that you correctly valued your skill set because people tend to spend more time on activities that reinforces their self-esteem.

Evaluate Market Need and potential for income

All that valuation is great, but none of that will mean anything if there isn't a need in the targeted market. Generally, most of us must abide by the law of supply and demand. In very rare case, some people are able to create their own market opening. The ultimate question you must ask for each hobby on the list is: whether there a market need for this as business opportunity? Specifically, you need to consider this thought: "if I convert___________hobby into a business, who would be my consumer and why would this person want this service?" After coming up with realistic answers for each hobby, you will create your third and final list. Reviewing the hobbies on list No. 2, you will create a new list, numbering all the hobbies based potential for income with No. 1 being the most promising idea. From this final list you should come out with your highest skilled hobby on which you possibly spend most of your time with a market opening and good potential for income.

Convert Leisure activity to Profit

After narrowing down the ideal hobby to convert, you are ready to cash it in as your personal piggy bank. You will do that by increasing time spent, amount of money vested and relabeling that activity as a business for profit. The time spent may be increased gradually over time or may be dramatic depending on the hobby. For example, John may decide to create a consignor shop that sells baseball cards or an online business that allows collectors to bid on rare cards. Either scenario will require spending additional money and time. The relabeling of the activity is very important. Since collecting cards is no longer a leisure activity, when john finds a rare card that his friend Joe has been after for years, he cannot give it to his friend for $20 bucks. John's mind must shit towards profit by selling that rare find to the highest bidder

After converting your hobby into a business, you should be well on your way to success. Be certain not lose the passion that drove your interest in the first place, that enthusiasm will always give you an edge over other businesses. It is never too late to pursue a hobby. Once you have a good list of hobbies that you routinely partake in. Maybe then, you can consider converting one of them into a business.

Allow me to tell a short story to help emphasize this point. I have a friend who makes miniature plants. I look at them and they are cute, but this type of hobby does not interest me. However, because she is my friend, I let her tell me about how she makes her mini plants.

Her face lights up with excitement as she demonstrates how she gives life to her plants. Her world is exciting. But her world also has a reality because it makes other adults and children happy with her plants as they place these trees and foliage into dollhouses, railroad train scenes, and other miniature creations.

You will discover that a hobby is something you enjoy primarily for personal rewards. Therefore, what is your personality type? Not the person that you show to the public, but the real person within.

For example, you may communicate to others that you enjoy the outdoors, however, when invited to join your friends on a camping trip; you make other arrangements to be elsewhere.

You enjoy the company of your friends, but your interest has changed. Camping is not your hobby, but being at home airbrushing a design onto your motorcycle is your preference. This is the reason for making a personality list in order to make finding a hobby an adventure for yourself.
