Just Passed Your Test? Don't Fear Your First Drive
By Toby Holmes
Many newly qualified drivers feel a mixture of emotions when they think the first drive after they've passed their practical test. Some fear the idea of driving without the comfort of an extra pair of eyes in the passenger seat, while some simply can't wait to take to the roads. Although it's perfectly normal to feel anxious during your first drive, it's important to remember that you've passed, which means you have both the knowledge and the skills required to drive, so be confident. After all, driving is a privilege that should be enjoyed, not feared.
Make it easier for yourself
If anxiety has counteracted the idea of enjoying your first drive then start by making it easier for yourself and go for a drive around the block or to a nearby shop. No one says you have to hit the main roads as soon as you've passed!
Before setting off, eliminate potential distractions as much as possible by switching off your phone and keeping the radio level down. Make sure you feel OK too - if you feel unwell or overtired then save your first drive for another day.
Take a few moments to get used to being on your own in the car before setting off. Are the mirrors and seat adjusted accordingly? Are there any obstacles in the car obstructing your view of the road? Turn on the engine and do your mirror checks as you normally would. A large number of new drivers forget to check their 'blind spot' once they've passed and it's important to keep checking this every time you set off.
Building your confidence
Try to stick to a route that you know well so that you avoid getting lost along the way. Avoid built-up, busy roads where you know there will be a lot of parked cars and oncoming traffic. Feel confident in everything you do; if you still feel a little anxious then continue taking a few short routes that you know relatively well. Do this over a period of days until you feel confident enough to drive around more unfamiliar areas. They key is to build aid your confidence as much as you so that you are prepared for pretty much every driving situation.
If you happen to come across a difficult situation whilst driving then remain calm and consider what you'd do if you were in a practical driving test. Common sense is your savior; analyse the safety of the situation and proceed accordingly.
Wait until you feel confident before taking friends as passengers. Similarly, build your confidence before taking longer trips and driving on the motorway. The motorway can be a challenging place to drive when you're new to the roads and can be equally difficult for experienced drivers!
