Most Bengali film buffs have an on-going love affair with French cinema. I am not one of them. But I did fall in love with the first French film I saw. It was a film made by Claude Lelouch in 1966, A Man and a Woman. It's a simple love story between a race car test driver and a working mother. He, a divorcee with a young son and she, a widow with a young daughter. They meet at the children's boarding school. They fall in love. The film is a beautiful romance of their love. Superbly shot and produced, it is a French classic. Even after almost three and a half decades the film remains etched in my memory. What was the magic? The sound: the theme track and the sound of a Ford GT 40.

It was the first time that I saw the Ford GT40 in motion. I was mesmerized. I remember seeing the film four times at Globe cinema in Kolkata in the space of a fortnight. Most of my friends thought I was infatuated with the beautiful Anouk Aimee, who starred in the film. It wasn't the woman, it was the GT40. The sound of a high cammed V8 tearing down a cold early morning on a banked race track is a clip I can play in my mind over and over again. Thirty eight years later, I re-discovered the film again on a DVD and watched those frames all over again. Here are two frames from the film.

So what was about the Ford GT40 that not only mesmerized me but a whole generation?

The history of the Ford GT40 began as an attempt to beat a certain Italian automobile manufacturer at the grueling 24 Hours of LeMans race. Each June, some of the world's best in the automotive industry descend onto a town West of Paris called LeMans to compete in a 24-Hour endurance competition. This tradition began in 1923 and since has become the pinnacle of automotive racing that challenges speed, performance and durability. A select group of European marquees, Porsche, Ferrari, Jaguar, Bentley, and Alfa Romeo had since dominated the LeMans 24 hours race. Henry Ford II wanted to join this elite group.

So during the early part of the 1960's, Ford attempted to buy Ferrari for $18 million to run its international racing program. The purpose was to use Ferrari and its famous race car technology to help Ford achieve a LeMans victory. The negations unraveled and then Ferrari walked away from bargaining table in May of 1963. Enzo Ferrari gave no indication as to why he had decided his company was no longer for sale. He hadan agreement with Fiat that gave some financial backing to a cash strapped Ferrari, while preserving Ferrari's independance.

A frustrated Henry Ford II decided to build his own super-car and beat Ferrari at LeMans.

Roy Lunn was an Englishman who had began his career at Ford of Britain and later came to the United States in 1958. He had played a role in helping to create the 1962 mid-engined Ford Mustang I Concept. The vehicle was an aluminum-bodied, two-seater that was powered by a 1.7-liter 4-cylinder engine.

After the Mustang I, Roy Lunn along with Ray Geddes and Donald Frey turned their attention to a racing program. The car that Ford had conceived was similar to a Lola GT, being low and mid-engined. The Lola was designed and built by Eric Broadley in Slough, England and first displayed in January of 1963 at the London Racing Car Show. Broadley was running low on funds and consequently more than eager to join with Ford.

Borrowed from the Lola GT was the monocoque center section and aerodynamic design. It was longer, wider, and stronger with a rigid steel section. By April 1964 the first GT40 prototype was completed. The same month the GT40 was displayed to the public at the New York Auto Show.  The first engine in these prototype cars was a 4.2 liter Ford V8, both block and heads were of aluminum, the engine was drying sumped, with IDA Webers. In this form the engine produced 350 BHP at 7,000 RPM and 275 lbs. ft of torque at 5,600 RPM and weighing dry 834 kgs. A non synchronized Colotti transaxle was used as this unit was thought to be the only transaxle capable of handling the engine's power.

During 1964, testing began and it became apparent that the rear of the car was light at speed; after two cars crashed they were repaired and taken to MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) in the UK for the tail lifting problem to be remedied. Bruce McLaren and Roy Salvadori were the test drivers, who found that contrary to earlier wind tunnel test results, a spoiler across the width of the tail, forced the rear end down and cured the instability problem. Over the twelve months to 1965 Le-Mans, they tried 289 ci. and 325 ci. engines, improved brakes, early ZF transaxles etc and finally the definitive nose.

By mid 1965 and with the ZF transaxle, Ford decided that the GT40 had reached a sufficiently advanced state of design to go into limited production and build 50 GT cars to qualify them for the Production Sports Car Category.

The GT represented 'Grand Turismo' while the designation 40 represented its height, only 40 inches. The number 40 was added to the designation when the Mark II was introduced.

The Mark II, still built in England, was put through extensive testing which solved many of the stability issues. The now famous Carroll Shelby was brought onboard to oversee the racing program. He began by installing a 7-liter detuned 485bhp NASCAR engine that was more powerful and more reliable. The result was a vehicle that was much more stable and quicker than the Mark I. For the 1965 LeMans, the Mark II proved to be a stronger contender but resulted in another unsuccessful campaign.

The third generation of the GT-40, the Mark III, was introduced in 1966. Ford continued to fine-tune and prepare the GT-40 for LeMans. The GT40 led the race from the beginning. This lead continued throughout the evening and into the morning hours. By noon, all but three of the Fords entered had been eliminated. The three Ford GT40s were 175 miles ahead of their nearest competitors coming up to the finish. The lead driver, Ken Miles, was ordered by Ford to slow and let the other two team cars, one driven by New Zealander Bruce McLaren, catch up for the formation finish. He did so, and McLaren drove on past him to take the actual win. This victory marked the beginning of a four-year domination of the race.

 In 1967 Ford introduced the Mark IV to LeMans. It was an all-American GT40; the previous versions had been criticized as being English-built and fueled by monetary resources from America. This had not been the first attempt for an all-American team using an American vehicle to attempt to capture victory at LeMans. Stutz had finished second in 1928. Chrysler had finished third and fourth during the same year, 1928. In 1950 the first major attempt to win at Lemans was undertaken by a wealthy American named Briggs Cunningham. Using modified Cadillac's he captured 10th and 11th. His following attempts to win at LeMans included vehicles that he had built where he managed a third place finish in 1953 and fifth place in 1954. This had been the American legacy at LeMans.

Of the seven vehicles Ford entered in 1967, three crashed during the night time hours. When the checkered flag dropped it was a GT40 driven by Gurney/Foyt to beat out the 2nd and 3rd place Ferrari by only four laps.

For 1968 the FIA put a ceiling on engine displacement at 5 liters. Ford had proven that Ferrari could be beaten and an American team and car could win at LeMans. Ford left international sports racing and sold the cars to John Wyer.

This left John Wyer with no works cars to compete, so with sponsorship from Gulf Oil he further developed the Mk1 for the 1968 and 1969 seasons.

The developments in 1968 included wider rear bodywork to accommodate wider racing tires, with six spoke magnesium knock on wheels, more efficient Girling brakes, a very strong engine:- 400 BHP at 6,500 rpm and 385 lbs. ft of torque. In 1969 this was raised to 425 BHP at slightly lower revs of 6,250 and 396 lbs of torque at 4,750 rpm with a 302 ci. Engine.

The Ford GT40 again won Le-Mans in both 1968 and 1969; the remarkable fact was that the same chassis, P1075 won in both years. The final Le Mans 1969 win by the Icky/Oliver driving team was in the same car that had won the previous year. It had already won five World Sports Car Championship races before coming back to Le Mans.

 This was the very first time that the same car had won Le-Mans twice and the feat was not repeated until the 80's when a Porsche 956 matched the record.

Speeds of 217 mph were recorded for the Ford GT40 at Le-Mans, which in 1969 was staggeringly fast - a lot of normal road cars did not get to 90 mph then, yet the road version of the Ford GT40 was capable of 165 mph.

 In 1969 new FIA rules and regulations ultimately retired the GT40's from racing and ended the winning streak.

Ford had comprehensively beaten Ferrari four years running and settled a score. To those of us on a permanent drip-feed of high-octane racing petrol into our veins, the GT40 is the one car whose form will remain embedded in our memories. There was something intrinsically sexy about the GT40, and maybe it had something to do with the fact that it was a Ford. A name synonymous with normal road going cars that we use every day, so that anyone driving a Ford could relate to this magnificent machine.

The reasons for buying hybrids vary. Some believe that the 'War on Terrorism' is a result of America's dependence on oil and by purchasing a hybrid they are doing their bit to stop supporting it. Buying a hybrid car is also their way of lending support to organizations that channel resources into the discovery of alternative energy. Air pollution, the increase in smog and the greater incidence of respiratory diseases motivates others. Hybrid owners also receive tax deductions, which may be a factor to be considered. Whatever your reasons, if you've decided to buy a hybrid, you've probably done your research. You've checked out the facts and discovered that while they may cost more initially, hybrids are far more environmentally-friendly and you'll save a ton on gas in the process. There is however, one relatively unclear dilemma about the practically of owning a hybrid: auto insurance. How do auto car insurance quotes differ when it comes to hybrid cars? Are hybrid cars at a higher risk and does buying one mean that you have no option but to pay higher insurance rates?

Let's look at the issue from the perspective of car insurance companies. Due to the fact that we're progressively becoming a more socially and environmentally conscious society, the fact that the Hybrid employs the latest technology and safety features, as well as the increasing prices of gas, this model is rapidly gaining popularity, and as it continues to do so the prices will fall, the availability of parts will increase, and all in all, many of the financial problems associated with this car will cease to exist. As statistics supporting the safety and functionality of hybrids emerge, the insurance rates for hybrids will start to stabilize. Also, many insurance providers are now encouraging the use of hybrids by offering online car insurance quotes for hybrids. This means that even if your initial insurance rates look a little steep, your premiums will actually be much more affordable than you fear.

There is confusion surrounding the issue of hybrid cars and insurance rates- some say that hybrids and insurance-friendly while others hold the belief that owning a hybrid is like asking for exorbitant premiums. At the end of the day, thanks to hybrid- specific discounts, the rates are not dramatically higher for hybrids. And even the existing gap can be bridged by availing of other discounts such as a defensive driver's credit, a good driver discount, air bag and safety mechanism installation discounts, etc. The lower gas prices, tax rebates and general sense of satisfaction from standing up for what you believe in may just tip the balance in the hybrids favor for many individuals. Besides, if you look hard enough, chances are you'll be able to find reasonable auto insurance quotes, even for a hybrid.

Have you ever wondered how machining works or even what it is? Simply put, it is a variety of processes where raw material is cut and shaped in a controlled environment.

Over the past 200 years, with the increase of technology, the meaning of the term has matured. During a former age, traditional processes were used such as boring, milling, drilling, sawing and reaming to name a few.

Traditional processes used tools like drill presses, lathes or milling machines to get the job done. This, combined with sharp tools, are used to get rid of material for a desired geometric end.

Machining is primarily the manufacture of metal products, however, it is not just limited to metal. It can also be used with other materials such as plastic, wood, composites and ceramic.

A machinist works in his or her shop nowadays with new technology. Electrochemical, electron beam, electrical discharge, ultrasonic and photochemical are a few of the newest technologies.

Working with these materials in this fashion is mostly done through a business, but it can be a hobby as well. Many people use this technique to support or maintain their income on a regular basis.

Nowadays, it is primarily done by what is known as "computer numerical control" or CNC. The operation and movements of lathes, mills and other machines, which are used, for cutting are controlled by computers.

There are three basic processes-milling, drilling and turning. Miscellaneous processes include planning, shaping, broaching, boring and sawing.

- Milling. Milling is accomplished when a cutting tool rotates so that cutting edges are brought into close proximity with the material.

- Drilling. In drilling, holes are produced and honed by a cutter, which rotates with cutting edges. The lowest position on the drill comes into contact with the material. Drill presses are generally used for these procedures but can be done on mills or lathes.

- Turning. Turning procedures rotate the material as the method of moving metal against the cutting tool. Lathes are generally used in turning.

- Miscellaneous methods. There are also a few miscellaneous methods of machining. Burnishing is such a method that can be operated on a drill press, mill or lathe. Swarf, fine metallic shavings, removed by a cutting tool is not produced in the burnishing process.

Commercialized machining is usually done in a machine shop, which has numerous workrooms complete with various cutting tools. These shops can be owned privately or operated within a large business.

This cutting process demands attention to detail. Each item must meet certain specifications, which are gleaned from blueprints, or drawings set down by the designer.

Machining is a singular part of a much larger manufacturing procedure. The material of choice starts with a design and then continues through the manufacturing process. This process is used to shape materials, or it can be used only as a finishing method. However it is used, it is a necessary and fantastic method to create useful objects for everyday usefulness.

Our bikes carry the most precious cargo there is - us. Taking time for a routine inspection can make a big difference when it comes to safety and our enjoyment of the ride. No one wants to be stranded on the side of the road, or have an accident because of mechanical failure.

We know that we're vulnerable on the road and that riding a motorcycle carries risk.� We can do a lot to lesson that risk by making both we and our bikes are fit and ready to ride.

Pre-ride inspections confirm they're worthy to carry us; checking them post-ride will catch any parts that may have come loose and we'll be able to note minor changes before they become major problems.

Your best resource is your owner's manual. Make these items part of your regular checks:

  1. Tires:

    • Pressure: Measure when tires are cold. Both the tire and motorcycle manufacturer will have specifications and in all likelihood, front and rear tires will be different.
    • Tread: If you're down to the wear bars, it's time for new tires. Look for worn tread, uneven wear, cracks, bulges, cupping, and any foreign objects. The photo shows something we found at one of our workshops.
  2. Spokes: Uniformly tight and intact; they can be tightened with a spoke wrench. Rims need to be true with no dents.

  3. Drive System: Unless it's electric, your bike will have either a chain, belt drive or drive shaft. Make sure chain tension is correct and that it's well lubricated. Check drive belt for wear and tension; if you have a shaft drive, check fluid levels and that there are no leaks.

  4. Cables & hoses: No fraying or kinking; no binding when handlebars are activated.

  5. Fluid levels: Oil, brake fluid, transmission, and coolant. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct way to assess. Make sure there are no leaks.

  6. Lights and electrics: Activate brake light with front and rear brakes independently; check front and rear indicators, horn, headlights - high and low beams.

  7. Throttle: Should snap back to home position.

  8. Brakes: - check brake pads for wear periodically. Test both front and rear to make sure they're working satisfactorily.

  9. Side stand: Retracts firmly: no bending, cracks or damage; the spring is intact and the cut-out switch functions.

  10. Clutch and brake levers: Smooth operation, correct amount of free play and proper adjustment.

Bonus: Look in the mirror. Make sure that you are physically, mentally and emotionally fit to ride.

Governments are starting to take notice of the importance of fuel economy. They are starting to establish actual guidelines that will regulate fuel efficiency in the future. In 2012 the European Union has stated that their gasoline cars must get at least 47mpg rating and their diesel cars must have a minimum of 52mpg rating. While this is great for European cars made, the United States continually produce cars that are not meeting environmental standards and this is discouraging their production and causing a severe issue for employees being laid off due to production. The United States taxes their vehicles not meeting expectations and it is said that taxes and penalties will increase rapidly over the next few years.

Engineers around the globe are working to find ways to help with fuel efficiency. Because there are several factors that affect fuel economies, these engineers are having to alter in those factors to try and produce efficiency in their vehicles.

The weight of a vehicle is the biggest factor out there. Larger vehicles and SUV's are killing the fuel economy standards. Companies around the world are trying to create lighter vehicles to meet those guidelines and to help with the growing problem of fuel economy.

Currently, the answer to our fuel economy problems have been thrown at the consumers to purchase a hybrid vehicle. Yes, hybrids are the best option available to consumers right now who want a car and better fuel economy. Most hybrid vehicles on the road are combining fuel and electrical options. Many of us want to help the environment. We care about global warming. But we also need transportation. Especially for those of us that live in large cities not well equipped with public transportation, or those who live in out-of-the-way areas tens of miles away from civilization - without a vehicle to get around in, we can't get around at all!



I know personally that I get aggravated at the seeming lack of options out there for truly improving the environment while handling my transportation needs. Here, in Los Angeles, public transportation is mediocre at best. And the hybrid cars pushed at us from car companies are often discovered to do little in helping the environment.



So I took the liberty to discover ways I could help the environment driving the car I already own. And I also investigated some alternative fuels.

A. Put the road rage aside and get comfortable with cruising! Just smile at every tree you pass and remember to drive at a controlled, steady pace. B. Especially important for Los Angelenos: if you get stuck in traffic, or behind an accident, turn off your engine. Idling uses fuel, especially if you drive a manual vehicle and must constantly rev the engine or ease the car forward.



C. Save air conditioning for must-need moments. Running your air conditioner will actually increase fuel consumption by as much as 10%, so roll down your windows and suck in the fresh air you're trying to protect! If you must run your air, recycle it within your vehicle and turn it off once the temperature in the cabin goes down.



D. If you're in the market for a new vehicle, of course go smaller and more compact when possible.



E. Take off any racks, boxes, or other items that may be on the roof of your vehicle. These cause wind resistance and add to the weight of your auto. Unfortunately this will reduce your fuel economy - sometimes significantly.



F. Car pool. Yes it's obvious, but still people forget to do this. More importantly, unless you're hauling a family of 7 or the entire soccer team, go with the smallest vehicle possible that gets the best fuel economy. And if you're meeting a friend somewhere, take turns picking each other up for your get togethers. That can also save on parking costs and hassles in highly crowded cities.l



G. Use cruise control when appropriate on highways and freeways. Always be safe, but if you can comfortably use your cruise control, do so. It will ensure that as you drive, you don't accidentally slow down and speed up, which is normal on long drives as our attention gets waylaid or we inadvertently drive at the same pace as the car next to us.



Did You Know? Alternative Fuels Are Out There!



Unless you're a die-hard environmentalist or car enthusiast interested in building your own vehicle (which is possible by the way!), you probably haven't heard about the alternative fuels available for standard vehicles. This is largely because these fuels are not near as profitable as oil.



Biodiesel (Globaldiesel)

This is a diesel equivalent, processed fuel that is derived from natural sources. You can purchase biodiesel and use it in your own diesel engine without making any changes to your vehicle. Such fuel is a blend of ultralow sulphur diesel and rapeseed oil



However, you can also create your own biodiesel from used cooking oil (just ask your local restaurants to donate it to you!). However, in this case you would need to modify your diesel engine.



Sulphur-Free Petrol

Many vehicles currently use Ultralow Sulphur Petrol or Diesel. Over the next couple years, this will progress to using Sulphur-Free Petrol. In 2008 use of such will be compulsory in the UK. Apparently, this will take affect in the US as well.



BioEthanol

A distillation of wheat, biomass, and sugar, BioEthanol produces less air pollutants than traditional fossil fuels. It is also renewable. There are different forms of this, including one that uses water and can be used without modifying your engine, and other types that can be mixed with traditional fuel or, if used exclusively, requires engine modifications.

Oh man, did you just hit a curb and are now in need of a repair of the alloy wheels on your car? I'm feeling you man, that is harsh. If you want to do this auto wheel repair cheaply, without going to rim repair shops, here is a step by step instruction on repairing mild scuffs. Deeper scruffs and gouges will likely need the help of a professional.

First you're going to need to go to an automotive paint store and find a good can of paint that matches the colour of your wheels. If you think you're going to walk in and find one can marked 'silver' you're in for a shock. If there aren't at least a dozen different shades of silver you are in the wrong store. You'll have to ask a sales representative if you don't know your colour, I won't know it for you. While you're out get some knifing putty, 250,400 and 800 grit sandpaper, masking tape, filler spray, and clear lacquer.

Start by taking the wheel off your car, doing this sideways will not be any fun. Lay the wheel down and give it a good wash. You must get it perfectly clean or you may as well not even try to do this. Dirt, wax, and grime are your enemy here.

Get your 250 grit sandpaper and start smoothing down the scrape. It doesn't have to be completely smooth, just get rid of the burs. Once you knock down the worst of it switch to the 400 grit to get it smoother and to help protect the finish that isn't damaged. Your trick will be to keep the sandpaper wet the whole time you use it, it makes it less aggressive and it will clog up less, rinse it off regularly.

Now get out your putty. Don't be afraid to put on more than you need, and wait a moment for it to firm up before shaping it. Now wait for it to set completely, be sure to read the instructions for your putty and follow them exactly. If you get impatient you get bad results. When it is set get the 250 grit sandpaper wet and start smoothing it down, move on to the 400 when you're getting close to a level finish with the rest of the tire. Run your fingers over it to get a feel for lumps.

Mask off the area to be sprayed, get it done right. You don't want your tires to turn out the colour of the spray. With that done hit it with the filler spray, go for 3 coats. Once it is dry, usually overnight, get your 800 grit sandpaper, get it wet, and sand that area smooth. Now you can finally start your final coats with the silver you've picked out. I'd say four coats with 15 minute intervals between each coat will do. Once this is dry give it a light go over with the 800 and get your lacquer finish out and use it to give the new paint that last bit of protection it needs. Remember this lacquer is thinner than paint, putting too much on will cause it to run. Once this is all dry you're all done, you've done a basic repair of your alloy wheels.

These statistics should give you a good baseline on how your current Internet marketing campaign is running.

What Do The Numbers Mean?

We all know that regular oil and filter changes are extremely important to the life of our automobiles, but do you know the main reason why?

Motor oil is designed to lubricate the moving parts inside the engine, but it is also designed to help with keeping the engine cool from all the friction caused from the engine's internal parts moving around at high rates of speed.

When your car's engine runs it burns gasoline and when gasoline burns, the by-product is carbon residue. We've all seen burned carbon left over after a barbeque or, on the backs of our fireplaces. The carbon that's left behind from burned fuel mixes with the engine oil which is why engine oil turns from the clean golden color when you pour it from the bottle to your engine, to black when you drain it out.

We've all been taught that we want to change our oil on a regular basis because it gets dirty.

The thing to know is that carbon is carbon whether it is burned gasoline, carbon build up in your fireplace, or even just diamonds. The carbon that the oil filter traps is very fine just like a fine abrasive powder, just like Ajax or Comet!

It's that very fine abrasive that causes continual grinding on "all" internal engine parts. The dirtier the oil the more carbon in the oil, the more carbon, the more wear and damage is done to your car's engine plus - numerous other parts.

Here's why abrasive carbon deposits mixed with the oil causes a couple of problems:

1. It now wears on the moving parts rather than lubricates.

2. It absorbs and holds heat, causing even more wear on moving parts.

This is the reason engines have an oil filter. The oil filter is there for one reason, to filter the carbon residue out of the oil as well as it can.

Your oil filter is designed to catch as much of this carbon as it can, but it can only trap so much before it becomes full. Even a new filter will not catch every bit of carbon, as very fine particles will find their way through.

So how often should you change your motor oil?

Very simply, if you don't change it often enough, the parts inside your engine will fail!
