Prom Dresses - Choosing the Most Flattering Style For Your Body Type

It is a factor that is rarely considered but the neckline on a blouse, t-shirt, dress or sweater can enhance the good and downplay the bad of a figure. Next time you are picking out a dress or other garment, apart from color, size and other aspects, look at the neck line. Be conscious about choosing the most flattering style for your figure.

Square - As the name implies, this neckline is shaped like the bottom half of a square. It works very well for women that are well-endowed at the bust without revealing too much cleavage. It works with most figures and faces except those who have a face that has is heavy at the jaws, with angled lines.

Halter top - This neckline is great for showing off nice, slim shoulders but is unsuitable for large busted people because it emphasizes the size of the bust. It is also ideal for those with pear shapes or heavy thighs because they keep attention at the top. It is also unsuited for very skinny people as boniness will be on show.

Jewel - This follows the curve the neck, and works well for emphasizing the bust. It works well for petite to midsize women because again, its lines emphasize the bust. Another name for it is the T-shirt neckline, due to its similarity to an actual T-shirt. It is round and sits at the base of the throat.

V-Neck - The V-Neck brings out the hourglass figure very well. It also flatters the large bust. It draws the eyes downwards and the V-shape gives a narrowing effect on the eye which makes it appear smaller. A V-neck that goes past the neck to reveal cleavage becomes a plunging V-neck.

Scoop - The neckline drops down from the neckline down to form a broad U- shape on the bodice. It appears to have the neck and shoulders in a scoop. It is great for a pear shaped body type, as it keeps attention on the upper, slimmer half. It also works well for most other body types.

Strapless - This neckline is great for putting on display a nice pair of shoulder and slim upper arms. Like the one shoulder design, it favors trim upper bodies. Stay away from it if you are on the extreme size of either the small or large side. Bigger sizes may look strained and droopy or appear to be sagging in a strapless top.

Sweetheart - The sweetheart neckline is actually shaped like the top half of a heart the neck. This neckline forms a type of heart shape at the neck. It works well in accentuating cleavage. Like the square neckline it is endearing to most body types

Cowl - A neckline where some fabric swings loose garment on the bodice. It works beautifully to disguise a small bust but is best avoided for the very well endowed as it adds bulk.

Keyhole - This is a tear shaped or round cutout at the front or back neckline. It is good for drawing attention upwards from broad waist or hips. An accessory like the pendant of a necklace or neck chain would add to the effect.
