Healthy Sandwich Recipes Kids Will Love

By Maria Noble

Sandwiches are a lunchtime staple for kids (and adults!) of all ages, but not all are created equally. If you want to make sandwiches that kids of all ages will love, but that are full of wholesome ingredients and essential nutrients, consider treating your kids to one of these healthy sandwich recipes.
Start With Delicious Whole Grain Bread
Healthy sandwich recipes start with a great base and using a whole grain bread is an excellent place to start. Look for a whole grain bread that's packed full of essential nutrients, including fibre, vitamin B12, folate, selenium and more. The fibre in whole grain bread helps children stay fuller longer, so they won't be rushing to the refrigerator for a snack every hour of the day.
Add Some Veggies To A Grilled Cheese
Grilled cheese is certainly delicious, but you can up the nutritional value by adding some veggies to the melty, gooey goodness. If you're looking for an alternative to a traditional grilled cheese made with cheese singles, dress up your sandwiches with fresh mozzarella, thick cut tomato slices and some fresh basil. If you aren't a fan of tomatoes, consider adding some chopped up broccoli pieces, sliced zucchini or other vegetables to your cheese singles.
Use Honey Instead Of Jelly
Peanut butter is a favourite of kids of all ages, but jelly can be high in sugar. Instead, use honey as a more natural alternative to jelly or jam. Honey can even help if you or your children suffer from seasonal allergies. If you choose a local honey, some of the allergen inducing pollen makes it way into the honey. This can help your body develop a natural immunity to the pollen, reducing your allergy symptoms.
Add Vegetables And Crunch To Your Tuna Salad
Tuna salad is pretty wholesome on its own, as long as you use low-fat mayonnaise. Mix together a little chopped green pepper, crisp canned corn and finely diced red onion with some albacore tuna (packed in water, not oil!) and just a tablespoon or two of low-fat mayonnaise. Add some romaine lettuce, tomato and maybe a slice of cheddar cheese to two slices of whole grain bread for a filling sandwich.
Sides For Your Healthy Sandwich Recipes
Complement your healthy sandwich recipes with healthy side options. Instead of potato chips and heavy dips, look for fresh fruit, low-fat pretzels or even baked pita chips with hummus. With so many delicious options for healthy sandwich recipes that use whole grain bread and wholesome side dishes, there's sure to be something to make every member of your family happy.
