Children & Car Accidents; the Alarming Statistics

Children & Car Accidents; the Alarming Statistics

Author: Christopher Davis

By far the most common type of injury accident involving children are those that also involve motor vehicle collisions. According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA), nearly 250,000 children are injured every year in car accidents.

This means that on any given day nearly 700 children are harmed due to accidents on our roadways. Of the 250,000 kids injured each year, approximately 2,000 die from their injuries. Children make up about 5% of total fatalities due to car accidents. In fact, for children between the ages of 2 and 14, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death.

Car accidents are also the leading cause of acquired disability (e.g., brain injury, paralysis, etc.) for children nationwide. And approximately 20% of the children who die in a car accident each year are killed in accidents involving a driver who is legally intoxicated. Nearly half of these children were killed while riding as passengers in an automobile driven by an intoxicated driver.

The failure to wear a seat belt or use a child safety seat is a contributing factor in more than half of the cases involving children who die in car accidents. Not only is an unrestrained child a potential distraction to the driver of the vehicle, but also the failure to wear a seat belt dramatically increases the chance that a child will suffer much more serious injury and death.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), at least 72% of the 3,500 observed child vehicle safety restraints were being used incorrectly. When that happens, the risk that the child will suffer an injury or more severe injury rises even more. NHTSA estimates that a properly installed and used child safety seat lowers a child's risk of death by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers ages 1 to 4.

Every state requires the use of approved child safety seats for children under the age of 5. According to NCSA there is only a 90% compliance rate with respect to using approved safety seats for children under this age. Notably, a recent study found that a key factor influencing the increased risk of harm to children in accidents is when the child is prematurely moved from a child restraint system up to an adult seat and then allowed to sit in the front seat too soon (source: Partners for Child Passenger Safety Fact and Trend Report, 2006.)

Annoying Television Commercials

Annoying Television Commercials

By Ronald Fitzgerald

Years ago, we watched television programming interrupted by brief commercial breaks. Slowly but surely, we are moving toward watching commercials interrupted by brief bursts of programming. As the commercials increase in quantity, many are decreasing in effectiveness. Let us look at where we are today.

On a recent day in May, I counted the number of commercials on one major network in a 30 minute period. The total was 33. This ridiculous quantity leads to such viewer behavior as:

1. Changing channels to see if another network is still in program mode.

2. Pressing the mute button until a commercial sequence ends.

3. Resolving not to buy certain advertised products, usually those - -

a. Whose commercial is repeated to excess, sometimes even twice in the same sequence or

b. Whose presentation is excessively silly, irrelevant, confusing, or even filled with dire warnings about dangers associated with the product.

One wonders if advertisers are even aware of their commercials causing such viewer reactions.

As the quantity of commercials has increased, more of the advertising seems to be downright irrelevant or even negative. I suppose this comes from the producers of commercials exhausting their creativity in an overly saturated marketplace. For example, we are apparently supposed to get interested in buying a vehicle because we have watched it crash through a wall or into a chandelier hanging in the desert! These examples are so irrelevant that I cannot even remember the names or models of the vehicles advertised. I just spend a couple of seconds wondering what unusual theories are behind the creation of such presentations. Another negative example is the advertising of some prescription medicines. We are told that a product might help condition X but then legally cautioned that it might also stimulate thoughts of suicide or cause a heart condition or even lead to death. My usual reaction is to resolve never to use that product.

I do not know how much worse the situation can get. However, I believe that it is time for a consumer revolution. Years ago, ad revenue paid for programming. Today, television networks get revenue from both ads and cable or satellite companies. It seems that there should be no financial need making it necessary to increase the quantity of advertising to truly excessive levels. Here are some consumer actions that might help correct the situation:

1. WE should encourage one or more consumer organizations to rate all major networks on average times per hour devoted to advertising. Time measurement would help discourage a switch to fewer but longer commercials.

2. Then, as consumers, we should begin moving away from networks with the highest advertising time ratings.

3. We should write to companies that sponsor irrelevant ads and promise to boycott their products.

The goal of consumers should be to end the excessive number of television commercials but still allow a reasonable level, perhaps 9 or 10 brief commercials per 30 minutes of air time. A study by the consumer rating organization could suggest a maximum total time for such a reasonable number of commercials. Our role can be to become active rather than passive consumers who watch the current problem get worse and worse.

How to Repair Basic Toilet Problems

How to Repair Basic Toilet Problems

By Tony Buel

Although most toilet problems require professional help, there are still some issues that can be basically done on your own. Knowing how and when to do this provides several advantages, such as being able to save time and money. Once you are fully aware of the solutions that you can do yourself, you will no longer have to worry about paying for the professional fee. In this article you will be able to learn how to repair basic toilet problems on your own. With proper care and knowledge, you will soon be applying this skill next time you encounter any of these common problems.

Clogged Bowl or Drain

If the bowl is filled or overflowing with water, you will have to remove it first using a small pail or bucket, just until it's half full. With the use of a plunger, pump the drain several times until the clog or blockage is removed. Repeat as necessary should the first attempt is not successful.

Leaking Toilet Bowl

If you happen to see or notice a damp bathroom floor, specifically around the toilet, check your bowl and see if it has any crack or leakage. In order for you to do this, you will first have to turn off the supply of water going to your toilet. Make sure the system is fully dry, then remove the toilet bowl and replace it with a new one. This time, examine the bowl carefully to make sure that the same defect won't happen again in the near future. Seal the base carefully to avoid it from leaking again.

Flushing Problems

One of the most common toilet problems is when it won't flush. If this happens to your own bathroom, you need to check its parts and the connection between them so you will know if everything is functioning as expected. You may find out that the handle is too loose or too tight, so you will need to adjust it. For stuck or loose handle, remove the cover of your toilet tank then clean the mounting nut so the handle will function properly and smoothly.

Fill Valve is Not Working

In case the fill valve is not filling the tank as normally as it should, or it is not filling at all, there might be some problems with the valve. If the valve is easy to disassemble and clean, you can definitely do it on your own. You can find more information using the instructions provided in the manual, or check the company's website for more reference. If nothing was changed and you are still having the same problem, there might be a more serious issue with your plumbing system.

As you can see, these basic toilet problems are not at all difficult to diagnose and to solve. However, if you think you are not 100% sure of how to approach a certain issue, make sure you call for professional help right away, rather than to try something that might just worsen the condition.

For all your plumbing needs be sure to check us out at Greg Hannah Plumbing. We now offer 24/7 emergency plumbing service for any urgent situations. We offer our plumber services in La Grange, Oak Park, River Forest, Brookfield, Downers Grove, and Darien Illinois.

Best Advice To Creating Your Fantasy Wedding

By Jennifer Rothchild
If you yearn for a magical, elaborate wedding, your wedding expenses may quickly add up to far more than you can afford. There's a lot you can do if you're worried about spending too much on your wedding. Take action to get your wedding budget back under control. Use these tips to keep your wedding within your budget, but to still have a memorable event.
If you plan on giving a wedding speech, plan the speech and practice it. If you don't plan and rehearse properly, you could embarrass yourself by talking too much, making an offensive joke, or simply forgetting what to say.
Your friends and family will have many well-intended suggestions, and some may be quite good; however, in the long run, your decisions must win out. Let your family member know what you want and thank them for helping, but do not let them influence your wedding. This allows you to look upon your wedding and reception with fondness.
Be mindful of possible weather conditions. Your guests probably won't want to celebrate an outdoor wedding in the heat of summer. Similarly, they may leave early, if they are too cold at your winter party. Do make sure that your guests are provided for during weather extremes at a wedding, such as having fans available if the heat is high.
See if you can borrow a special item of apparel from a friend for your wedding ceremony. When you do this you save money, you can make yourself look way better and even form a closer bond with people who become more involved with the wedding.
After deciding upon a date and theme for your wedding, creating stylish invitations that pull your wedding together is an important next step. The invitations typically include the colors of your wedding and clue your guest in on the theme. It's important to consider all possible options before choosing your wedding invitations.
After you have determined your overall vision for your wedding, you should commit it to paper. Bring your ideas along with you as you start to shop for services and vendors. Once you have gathered information on the various companies that can provide you with your chosen motif, you can start the process of elimination by comparing their prices and services.
Flowers that are abundant in your state during specific seasons will not be easily available in climates that are tropical and humid or cooler and dry like the Mediterraneans. Speak to pros near your destination to see what is readily available.
You can save quite a bit of money by purchasing your wedding dress over the Internet, but make sure to factor in shipping and alteration time when planning when to order. While buying a dress online may be less expensive, alterations can quickly add to the cost. Don't forget to add this additional cost into your budget!
You can still have an amazing and memorable wedding without going to extremes. Put the ideas from the preceding paragraphs into play and you're sure to plan a divine wedding that fills your heart without emptying your wallet.

How to Choose the Right Nursing Home

How to Choose the Right Nursing Home

By Joseph Devine

Not everyone has time to adequately care for their elderly family members and it might become necessary to admit your loved one into a nursing home. If you decide that a nursing home is the right option for your family, then you must also face the difficult decision of which nursing home to choose.

What to Ask on a Visit

There are numerous questions to be answered about a given nursing home before you should choose to admit a loved one in to the care of that facility.

- Ask to see the most recent survey report. Every year a report is filed after the state inspects the facility, including all violations that were found and any efforts by the facility to rectify the violation.

- Ask about the ratio of nurses to residents at any given time. This can tell you a lot about the care that will be provided and how quickly a response to an emergency can be obtained.

- Ask to see how many complaints were filed in the last year and what they were.

- Ask about the turnover at the facility. If the nurses are happy and sticking around, the stress level and care that is provided is likely going to be better.

- Ask if all of the nurses are certified.

- Ask about what steps are taken to keep residents mobile to prevent muscle atrophy.

- Ask how many people have left the facility in the last year.

- Ask about the food that is offered and if there are options.

These questions will give you a good idea of whether or not the facility is right for you. After seeing several homes, you can compare the answers to these questions and narrow it down to the right fit.

Call the Texas Department of Human Services (1-800-458-9858)

You will not be able to get an answer on whether a facility is necessarily good or bad, but you can get a number of questions answered that you can be confident are accurate. Asking a state department might also be more comfortable for you than asking the actual nursing home. You'll be able to find out about:

- Any proposed license terminations in the past two years

- The number of complaints filed in the past year

- The number of those complaints found to be valid

- The number of "quality of care" violations have been found in the past two years

Nursing Homes Can Be Held Liable for Negligence

Be thorough in your search for the right nursing home to avoid poor care. If do you choose a nursing home that ultimately does not treat your loved one with the appropriate care and injury or death results, then you might be able to claim damages as a result. You should seek information and consultation on how to handle such a situation. If you would like to get more information on your rights regarding this negligence and the steps you can take to take action, view the website of personal injury lawyers Friedman & Bonebrake, P.C.

21 Things You Should Never Buy New (Children's Edition)

21 Things You Should Never Buy New (Children's Edition)

By Chrissy Freeman

Add one part recession, one part green movement, and then sprinkle some fast growing kiddos into the mix. The result? Children's consignment has a recipe for success! And with an estimated 5,000 seasonal consignment sales in the country, it's no wonder that thrifty, green mommies are turning to these sales to make some money and find great deals!

Here is a list of 21 Things You Should Never Buy New:

  1. DVDs and CDs: Let's face it, one can only watch the Wiggle's Christmas special but soooo many times. Recycle your kids DVD's and refresh your collection each sale season
  2. Books: These are one of my favorite consignment sale items - especially for the classics!
  3. Video Games: US News says "Kids get tired of video games rather quickly." We say... so do their daddy's! Pass them along to the next "kid" to enjoy
  4. Special Occasion & "Dressy" Clothing: Boutique clothing is huge at consignment sales - higher quality items last and last, plus they usually don't see the sandbox or mud puddles too often.
  5. Halloween Costumes - These truly do only get one wear per year! Or, you can just pick up a few to add to the dress up box.
  6. Children's Furniture: I love character beds & custom furniture, but could never afford it as retail. Enter consignment sales. Be cautious when purchasing cribs, though, especially drop-side models which are at the top of recall lists.
  7. Games and Toys: Of course! Just make sure you keep all those pieces together so you can resell without guilt!
  8. Maternity Clothes: These short-lived items are PLENTIFUL at sales. One consigning mom encourages, "Save your money to buy a new wardrobe for yourself after the baby comes.
  9. Baby Clothes: Even if you want the "best for baby" and have concerns over recycled clothing, there are always tons of NWT (new with tags) items in the baby section!
  10. Musical Instruments: Who knows whether Billy REALLY wants to play the guitar or if he thinks it'll be as easy as mastering Rock Band. Make a small investment early to see if the interest sticks
  11. Shoes: My child has worn 3 different sizes in the last 6 months, talk about moving through something quickly!
  12. Nursery Bedding: Consignment sales have some beautiful (and complete) bedding sets at much less than retail. My mom once got a Pottery Barn Quilt, sham and sheet set for $25 at a half price sale. We've been searching for a match and can't find it for less than $150 anywhere! (even eBay!)
  13. Cars: Well, maybe not the big kind... but consignment sales are the perfect place to pick up Cozy Coupes or Power Wheels Toys. These big ticket items go fast, so volunteer at your favorite sale and shop early to get first dibs.
  14. Breast Pumps: The pump is the expensive part and the "other parts" are what you really don't want to share. Save yourself the $200-300 cost in a pump and buy it used. Then, pick up new hoses, shields and bottles to avoid the "ewww" factor.
  15. Strollers: High end strollers last and last. Instead of settling on a cheaper / poorly made model, buy a high-quality, name-brand stroller for a fraction of the cost and you'll love the bells & whistles.
  16. Baby Swings, Bouncers and Bumbos - Babies use these items for an average of 6-9 months so these are usually in great condition
  17. Fall & Spring Coats - The seasons are so short that soon enough they will need a heavier coat or none at all, so they get very little use!
  18. A Selection of Sippy Cups or Bottles - One consigning mommy bought a few brands of super cheap sippy cups to figure out which one her picky baby would like. No need to pay full price just to "try it out!"
  19. Swing Sets & Outdoor Play Equipment - The good stuff is made to last and can be repurposed in any yard. Consult a handyman service to help beef up swing sets or playhouses that need some TLC and they'll be good as new!
  20. Bikes, Scooters, Outdoor Ride-on Toys - One mom says "I've bought brand new and they are chipped, dented, and beat up looking after a week or two. Buy a used one in good condition and save at least half the price."
  21. Collectors Items & Name Brand Toys - If you are a savvy shopper and know the brands, you can get some incredible deals on name-brands toys like American Girl Dolls or Melissa & Doug.

This article was inspired by the US News article: 21 Things You Should Never Buy New.

Chrissy Freeman is a consignment sale enthusiast, marketing geek, web designer and mom to 19-month-old Jackson. She started http://ConsignmentMommies.com in the fall of 2009 in the Greensboro and Raleigh markets after trying to find sales in her area and becoming frustrated with existing sites and services. In February 2010 the site went national and received over 1/4 million page views in the first three months.

The site provides a zip-code search, map views of area sales and by-week listings so moms can create a plan of attack each weekend. Plus, shoppers and consignors can rate sales and give their feedback - an extension of the good old "don't miss this sale" or "get there early, the crowds are crazy" advice system.

Celebrities: They Are Just People Too

Celebrities: They Are Just People Too

By Scott Bianchi

Every time I go to the supermarket and stand in line to check out I see dozens of magazines or tabloids about celebrities. My question to anyone that buys these magazines or cares what is inside is, why do you care?

I can understand going to a movie because you are a fan of the star. I personally try to see any movie that Tom Hanks is in because he makes excellent films. I can understand why a person might want to go to a concert to see their favorite musician. There are many examples where a fan could be interested in a celebrity. That is where it should stop though. Why do people care if Nick and Jessica are breaking up? Why do people care what Ben Affleck is doing? If it wasn’t for Matt Damon and “Good Will Hunting” he would be working a construction site like he was in the movie, because he hasn’t made a good movie since.

If my next door neighbor is having trouble with his spouse it is not found all over the magazines and tabloids. Why are “celebrities” personal lives any different? They are not any more important than the rest of us, or are they? It is our hard earned money that makes these people famous in the first place. There are movie stars making $20 million a movie because we buy the tickets. There are drug dealers/gang bangers, making a fortune as rap stars because we buy their CD’s and tickets to see them in concert.

The most unfortunate part of this fascination with celebrities is that more often than not, they are bad influences on younger people and bad examples to society in general. It is very discouraging when you see celebrities rarely being found guilty of crimes because they have high-priced attorneys that get them off. This is not to say they are all guilty but I think there have been cases when a guilty man was set free. Celebrities act as if they are immune to the same laws that apply to the rest of us.

It seems as time passes that people’s priorities become more and more distorted. Instead of focusing our time and energy on people who need it, whether they are sick, homeless, undereducated, or what have you, people spend time and money following the people who need no help from anyone because they can buy all the help they need. Somehow I did not feel bad for Jennifer Anniston and Brad Pitt when they broke up. Both are very well-off financially, both are very attractive, they had multiple homes together with servants to handle all their needs. Their biggest concern was selling off their main home for $20 million. This is just not reality, but then again, maybe that is the reason people are caught up in their lives. At least the magazines and tabloids that discuss these very wealthy people do serve one purpose, they help to keep the homeless people warm on those artic winter nights.

Careers Advice: What They Don't Teach You in Business School

Careers Advice: What They Don't Teach You in Business School

By Christine Brown-Quinn

What do MBA students need to know in order to achieve career success? This is the question I asked myself before presenting to students at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business as part of their 2010-2011 MBA Leaders Series.

I decided to condense 20+ years of experience in International Finance into 7 Super Shortcuts to Career Success. These are the tips they don't teach you in business school:

1.Speak up - this is in fact the best career advice I ever received. It sounds very strange to people who know me, but in my early 20′s I was definitely more reserved, shy even. I wasn't aware that this was how I was perceived (and perception is everything!) until I had asked an experienced consultant at the firm I was working for whether he could write me a recommendation for graduate school. His recommendation letter was flattering, but what served me the most was his personal insight.

2. Network - I grew up in business before the internet, LinkedIn, Facebook etc. (I can't believe I'm that old either!). I learned that networking was absolutely the best way to find a job and that it was a two-way street. What do you have to offer an older, more experienced professional in a networking situation? First and foremost you make them look good when they refer you to a colleague. They are confident you are effective at what you do and that you will deliver results. Also remember that networking is about developing relationships. Let someone get to know you and vice versa. Do informational interviewing if you're looking for a job - ie talk to others about what they do, what they like and dislike about their role. Your interests and plans are bound to come up in a non-threatening, natural way within the conversation.

3. Invest in yourself - this not only means educating yourself through seminars and courses, but it also means going after opportunities in your current job which will stretch and challenge you. Investing in yourself includes taking care of yourself physically and mentally - exercise, healthy eating and interests outside of work. What does this have to do with a successful career? Keeping yourself healthy will allow you to withstand the pressures of business and enable you to maintain a positive, can-do attitude. During one of my daughter's rotations in medical school the teaching doctor asked the medical students to be at the hospital by 7am. She called me to tell me how ridiculous this was, how students don't get up at that hour etc. I just listened (for about 10 minutes). I then said, "Sarah, don't ever pass up the opportunity to learn something. This doctor seems dedicated to teaching. I recommend being there at 6.45am. "

4. Start saving now - it's never too early. The earlier you learn the discipline of sticking to a budget and putting money aside the better. Again, what does this have to do with career advice? Isn't this personal financial planning? Starting to save now will put you in a position of freedom later - freedom to change jobs/careers, freedom to express your views without fear of being fired. In today's fast-moving global economy restructurings are now the norm so be prepared to be flexible. Having savings will make the work environment less stressful and could provide the launch pad to a new career or degree.

5.Take control of your own career - no one is going to look after you. You have to look after yourself. Think about what makes sense for you according to your own goals, time frames and personal situation. Don't forget that the human resource department represents the firm first, you second.

6. Don't leave before you leave - this relates particularly to men and women who have young families or are thinking about having families. Sometimes we choose to take on less challenging positions because we have concerns about how we'll be able to handle it. (Studies show that this is more prevalent in females than males, sorry Ladies). This can be a dangerous strategy as it can lead to lower job satisfaction, and you've taken yourself out of the game without even trying. Focus on getting the right partner who will support the whole you. The rest will work itself out.

7. Do the right thing - in an environment that focuses on short-term results, there can be a tendency to brush aside the "right" thing to do. What's the best thing for the client, the employees, and the community we live in? A savvy capitalist takes all of these aspects into consideration as it will ultimately lead to a sustainable business. One benefit of having a family is that it tends to keep you straight. Personally I have found that having kids has really helped me focus on making the right choices. What would I expect my own kids to do in this situation? How would I expect them to behave? Don't I have to live up to the same standard I set them?

So there you have it! 20+ years of experience in 7 concise bullet points! Enjoy the ride.

Entrepreneur and author, Christine Brown-Quinn founded her consultancy practice The Female Capitalist in 2010, after publishing her book entitled Step Aside Super Woman, Career & Family is for Any Woman (Bookshaker, Great Britain, 2010). Green Environment

Green Environment

By Adam Bercier

Working towards a greener environment

Protecting the environment is not something that can be taken lightly in the times we live. Mankind, in its constant zeal to live an improved and a better life has been unfairly neglecting the environment over centuries now. Now we are experiencing the impact of the unsustainable growth and development. Increased occurrences of natural disasters like tsunamis, earthquakes and ever changing weather patterns across the world cannot be mere coincidences. They are radical cues that we need to pay attention to Mother Nature and work towards a greener environment.

We have only one planet and we need to preserve it for our future generations. We need to develop and find means to have a sustainable growth; something that doesn’t come at the cost of environment. Every small effort counts and what is needed essentially is a shift in our pattern of thinking and way of life. Gone are the days when we could indiscriminately plunder the resources that earth has bestowed upon us. These are the times of conservation and symbiotic living.

The means for such a living are what we need to look forward to and develop. What we simply need is a ‘replacement therapy’ for us. Let us work to replace our ideas, resources, products and our way of living. Let us look forward to ideas that promote a greener way of life. Let us adopt products that are environment friendly and take help in its sustenance. Let us develop new technology that improves and conserves what we have exploited till now. Every small step matters and gives new hope. Right from using paper bags instead of plastic bags to driving hybrids and fuel efficient vehicles – each step counts.

This can only materialize if we have a collaborative approach to things. Working towards a greener environment is not only a prerogative of government and large organizations but also individuals. Governments and organizations can contribute by adopting policies and laws that are conducive to conservation efforts. Governments across the world are realizing the importance of caring for environment and are forming regulations and procedures that encourage a sustainable growth of industries keeping a check on how the environment is affected by this growth.

Large organizations along with governments enact these proposals and become providers and patrons of new technologies that help in creating a better world. Various researches are thriving across the universities in the world to find cleaner solutions that pave way for future without taking much from Mother Nature. What would matter now will be adoption of these solutions. If we can find means to promote these environment friendly technologies, half the battle would be won. We need to find ways to mass produce these good alternate solutions and make them affordable and easily accessible for the masses to make this initiative really successful. Starting with your own home is a green way to contribute to making this earth green once again. You can easily start to build solar panels and wind turbines to create green energy.

How to Choose Wonderful Modern Bathroom Mirrors?

By Heather Mitchell

The latest modern bathrooms are equipped with not only the necessary plumbing, but also all kinds of interior details that give to the room individuality and original look.

The main functional part of the bathroom besides the obvious bathroom vanity is the vanity mirror. This familiar household item helps us to direct the beauty and fine in conjunction with the space of a bathroom, expanding its space and create a beautiful decorative effect.

So, how to choose right a vanity mirror? Don't worry, it's not rocket science. But here are a few guidelines for you to follow when you go to make your selection.

All mirrors are made of a single technology, but the coating on the reverse side can be different, depending on the destination mirror. Thus, the mirror for the bathroom and other rooms are different from each other. Conventional mirrors for the rooms are cheap because they have a simple finishing. A bathroom mirrors have a special water-resistant coating, which allows you to carry frequent changes in temperature and high humidity and allows the mirrors to stand the test of time. Pay attention to what the mirror itself is manufactured from as well as the frame. Both pieces are of equal importance when you are looking for something with durability.

For the cheaper variety mirror such tests are unlikely to survive. With heat and humidity, there is always a problem with cracking or warping to the mirrors frame. None of which are good things if you'd like the mirror to stay in that spot forever. The rear cover can be multilayer and made from resin; it prevents the peeling of the amalgam and water penetration. The most durable mirrors have a silver finish rather than the aluminum amalgam. In addition, the process of manufacturing the mirrors requires use of expensive equipment and high quality raw materials, which is why such mirrors are more expensive. In addition, due to high humidity, this mirror is best placed in a stainless metal or plastic frame. That's not to say though that all wood or MDF mirrors are bad though. Some have been specially treated to withstand such elements. The bottom line is: Do your homework.

The main place for a mirror is obviously over the sink. It is best if it is stretched vertically and is fixed on hinges to adjust the angle of inclination. With this, you get more of a complete "picture". It is also very useful if the main mirror is attached to the additional small mirror on the handle that allows you to see yourself from behind. Do not feel limited by these constraints, however. You can add mirrors to other places in addition to over a vanity in a large bathroom to give the appearance of space or simply as simple, stunning accents.

Vanity mirror with shelf

The mirror for the bathroom - it is not just a stylish piece of furniture, but also a very practical thing. Many models are equipped with additional mirrors, functional devices. For example, mirrors are often provided with special small shelves, which can comfortably accommodate the necessary things: creams, lotions, combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other toiletries. Whether you need it for storage or simply as a decorative accent, a modern mirror can do wonders for any bathing space.

Maththala: The Second Internatinal Airport in Sri Lanka

By Marlon I.

Sir Lanka is a country where we earn a considerable amount of our income via foreign trade. We have the best spices in the world, the best Tea in the world and many more. Sri Lanka is a country worth watching. We earn another considerable amount of income through tourism. In the present most of the foreign trade is done by air freight. Sea freight is also used commonly but the above mentioned products and the above mentioned industries are strictly depending on the air transportation system.

To get the maximum out of this, we need airports with comfortable passenger hanging areas and sophisticated cargo and baggage handling capabilities and facilities. Plus, we need modern airplane walkthroughs and extended tarmacs to handle the jumbo class jets travelling full blast around the world.

Sri Lanka has only one International airport that can handle this kind of demand at the present. That is the Katunayaka International airport. It can handle all these demands but the ever rising amounts have begun to frustrate the airport little by little. It is obvious that in a few years the mentioned airport will not be enough to serve the demands without TRAFFIC JAM.

Maththala airport is going to take Sri Lanka to a new era of development. With the development of this project it has opened up various job opportunities for local citizens. After completing this is expected to grow Sri Lanka’s tourism new scale which is possible with the growth of aviation transactions in Sri Lanka. As a result of this Air Port there is going to be a large scale development throughout the rural maththala area to match with the demands of an airport.

The government ultimately identified this upcoming problem and took steps in constructing yet another, the second international airport of Sri Lanka, the International Airport Terminal at Maththala, Hambantota, Southern Province, Sri Lanka.

The reason to choose a remote location as Maththala is obvious because this airport will definitely get directly connected with the Hambantota harbor and elevate the development, trade and commerce in the country. Furthermore, this will definitely draw a lot of investors and investments pilling up in Colombo to the under developed areas of the country.

The dedicated premise for the Maththala airport is 2000 hectares. Even this land is already allocated for the project, the first phase will only utilize on 800 hectares.

The first phase is going on at the present with an estimated expenditure of US$ 200 million. This includes the construction of a 3.5 kilometer long and 75 meter wide air strip for landing and taking off planes, A passenger terminal building equipped with the latest baggage handling mechanisms, a cargo loading/Unloading and storage facilities, A 41 meter air traffic controlling unit, Two air bridges with navigating capabilities and finally a jumbo jet passenger terminal. At the finalization of this phase, the airport will be able to handle four airplanes in the same time and one million passengers per year.
