Cooking Brisket in the Oven - a Beginners Guide

Author: Ralph Serpe

Cooking brisket in the oven is a time consuming process, but also a very rewarding one. When your family and friends take their first bite of your delicious brisket, they will most definitely be asking you for the recipe. This article will make you a brisket cooking pro!

Did you know that at one time, brisket was considered a very poor quality meat? History has it, that two brothers from Germany, back in the 1950's decided to smoke up some leftover brisket they had. They left the brisket inside their smokehouse for an entire weekend. When they returned to work they sliced up the meat and served it to their customers. The meat was so flavorful and tender that it quickly became a hit.
I remember the first time I had the pleasure of eating beef brisket. It was at this fabulous little Barbecue Restaurant in Croton-On-Hudson, NY called Memphis Maes.

New York isn't known for its BBQ, so my wife and I were a bit skeptical. But after we took our first bite of the "Texas BBQ Beef Brisket", we became believers! My wife then looked at me and said , "You have to make this!" Not wanting to let the lovely wife down, I took it upon myself to try and recreate the BBQ brisket at home. I don't own a smoker, so I needed to improvise and cook the brisket in the oven.

Believe it or not, the oven makes a pretty darn good BBQ brisket. Many BBQ enthusiasts will tell you that a smoker is the only way to cook brisket, but I can tell you from experience this is simply not the case.
The secret to a good beef brisket is to cook it nice and slow at around 225 degrees for several hours. So if you are looking for a quick and easy meal tonight, cooking brisket in the oven is not the way to go.
You will have to prepare this particular recipe one day in advance and you will need to plan some extra time to cook the brisket as it takes several hours to finish cooking.

Lets Talk About Dry Rubs
There are a variety of different dry rub recipes you can use for your beef brisket. One such recipe is listed below. Don't be shy with your dry rub. You want to really coat the brisket well. Its not called a rub for nothing, so really rub those spices into the meat with your hands. After the rub has been applied put the brisket in the fridge and let it marinade over night.
DRY RUB
- 1/4 Cup Paprika
- 1/4 Cup Light Brown Sugar
- 2 Tbs Chili Powder
- 2 Tbs Kosher Salt
- 2 Tbs Freshly Cracked Black Pepper
- 1 1/3 Tbs Granulated Garlic
- 1 1/3 Tbs Granulated Onion
- 2 Tsp Ground Cumin

THE SAUCE
We need some type of liquid to slowly braise the brisket in the oven. Braising is an excellent way to cook brisket in the oven because it keeps the brisket moist and very tender.
What I do is mix some good quality store bought barbecue sauce with a little beef broth to thin it a bit. I like to use a smoke flavored barbecue sauce. To give it a little more smoky flavor, I also add a few drops of liquid smoke. This makes a very tasty braising liquid.

LETS START COOKING ALREADY!
Before we start cooking, lets do a little preparation.
Remove the brisket from the fridge and leave it on the counter for 30 minutes or so to allow it to come to room temperature.

Get yourself a baking dish with a tight fitting lid big enough to hold your brisket.
Mix equal parts of barbecue sauce and beef broth. I like to make enough so that the brisket is at least half submerged. Pour this mixture into your baking dish.
Pre-heat your oven to 225 Degrees.
Heat up a large pan over medium heat and add enough oil to cover the pan. Add the brisket to the pan and brown on all sides until it forms a nice crust.
Place the browned brisket into the baking dish with the braising liquid. Put the lid on and place it in the pre-heated oven.
About half way through the cooking process, flip the brisket over so that the other side has time to cook in the braising liquid.
The brisket is done when it is fork tender and has an internal temperature of around 185-200 degrees F. The amount of time it takes to cook a brisket in the oven really depends on the weight of the brisket. Figure 1 1/2 to 2 hours per pound of meat.
There you have it. My recipe for cooking brisket in the oven.

How to Make Exciting Vegetable Pizzas with Padrino's Pizza and pasta

How to Make Exciting Vegetable Pizzas with Padrino's Pizza and pasta

Author: Padrinos Pizza and Pasta

If you thought that the only exciting pizzas were the ones smothered in beef, pepperoni, fish, or seafood, you might be surprised to discover that a vegetable pizza recipe can be just as delicious as its meat or fish counterpart. There are lots of types of pizza and vegetable pizza is actually one of the more popular kinds.

The key to making mouthwatering vegetable pizzas is to choose the vegetables carefully and choose your seasonings even more carefully. For example, a pizza topped with vegetables and nothing else is never going to be exciting. A pizza flavored with vegetables and spices or herbs will be better. Use a delicious pizza sauce as well and your pizza is sure to be popular.

How to Add Flavor to Your Pizza

If you are going to use vegetables as your pizza topping and no meat or fish, Bellevue Pizza Delivery you can be bold with your choice of pasta sauce. Perhaps you fancy a creamy white pasta sauce with plenty of garlic, or maybe a spicy tomato sauce with chilies appeals to your adventurous nature.

You might want to use plenty of cheese to complement the vegetable flavor, in which case what about putting half the cheese under the vegetables and half on top? Combine a couple of different cheeses, if you want to, or try something new. What about using a strong flavored blue cheese on your vegetarian pizza, or goat's cheese? These cheeses are great with any vegetables so feel free to experiment.

Making a homemade pizza dough recipe adds to the appeal of any pizza. You can choose from a whole wheat crust, an herb or spice one, a fluffy thick dough, a crispy thin base, or something different. Think about your planned pizza toppings and decide what kind of pizza sauce and crust would go nicely.

International Vegetable Pizza Recipes

You can make international pizzas just with vegetables. For example, if you have an eggplant to use up, you could team it with feta cheese and olives for a Greek touch or with curry powder, spinach, and potatoes for an Indian style pizza.

If you are going to use sliced plum tomatoes, add chopped onion, plenty of mozzarella and some fresh basil leaves for an authentic Italian pizza recipe. If you are planning to make a traditional Italian pizza, by the way, use a thin and crispy crust for it.

Why not experiment with fusion style vegetarian pizzas? You can combine popular Mexican vegetables like tomatoes, corn, and avocado with Indian spices like curry powder and turmeric for a tasty finish, or pretty much any chopped vegetables with any fresh herbs. Grill the vegetables before making the pizza to bring out their flavor and give them a mouthwatering smoky taste.

Try using parsley, cilantro, thyme, oregano, dill, marjoram, or mint to add flavor to vegetable pizzas. You can either stick with one herb or combine different ones. Herbs de Provence adds a taste of France to your pizza recipe and there are other readymade herb or spice mixes that you can play around with, in order to maximize the flavor of your vegetable pizza recipe.

A Complete Guide to the Benefits of White Tea

A Complete Guide to the Benefits of White Tea

By Nipika Borah

For centuries, people have used tea for medicinal purposes. However, now, even modern science has woken up to its benefits so that they recommend its different varieties for different health issues. While it is common knowledge that green and black tea has numerous health benefits, there is also another type that is very healthy to start with - white tea. The primary quality possessed by it is that it consists of the highest level of antioxidants.

Antioxidants are nothing but nutrients that are concerned with protecting the human body from the harm caused by free radicals. The latter is usually responsible for causing major harm to your body such as accelerating the process of aging or causing damage to DNA. These free radicals are scooped up and neutralized by antioxidants which can be found in abundance in white tea. For this reason, it is considered to be the ultimate drink of health.

This type of tea also has the ability to battle different forms of cancer like prostate, stomach and colon cancers. The development of cancer cells are prevented by a type of antioxidant called flavonoids present in it. This antioxidant also prevents the growth of new cancer cells.

Other forms of brew like black tea also come with its share of health benefits but in the case of the white variant, the effect or impact is significantly more. For instance, several studies point to the fact that artery function can be improved by it by thinning the blood. This helps in lowering blood pressure. The possibility of a sudden stroke can be avoided by its ability to keep blood vessels healthy and strong.

Again, white tea can be instrumental in reducing cholesterol. This is done by the presence of another form of antioxidants namely catechins. All these help in protecting the whole circulatory system and, more importantly, the heart. It has been discovered by researchers that people who consume at least two cups of the white brew daily have less chances of dying owing to a heart attack.

It is antiviral and antibacterial in nature. The whole immune system can be toned by the antioxidants present in it so that you can safeguard yourself against a wide variety of illnesses. People who suffer from cold and cough often can opt for it in order to get relief from constant coughing and a running nose. It is, in fact, a much better option than black tea though the latter too can be quite helpful. Thus, you can understand that by incorporating this healthy beverage in your daily diet, you can make a significant difference to your health.

Age Dieting - Choose The Best Diet For Your Age Range

By Yulia Berry

You probably know that it is much harder to lose weight when you are 30 than when you are 20. And if you are over 40, it is even more difficult. Every year your metabolism slows down. That is why the older you are, the more attention you should pay to healthy dieting and maintaining a healthy life style.
You are 20 - 30 years old.
It is not common to have a serious problem with weight in this age range. You can lose 3-5 pounds without trying too hard. The best way to lose extra pounds is a fruit diet. Fruits are rich in vitamin C, which will help you to stay physically active. Pectin, fruit acids and potassium burn calories and improve your metabolism and digestion.
Here is an example of an apple diet:
Breakfast: grate 1 apple; add 1 low fat yogurt and 1 table spoon of oatmeal.
Brunch: 1 apple.
Lunch: slice 2 apples and add spinach. For sauce mix 1 low fat yogurt, 1 tea spoon of olive oil, 1 tea spoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tea spoon of water.
Snack: 1 apple and 3 walnuts.
Dinner: slice 1 apple, squeeze lemon juice on it and eat it with 5 oz of cheese.
You are 30 - 40 years old.
When you turn 30 years old, your metabolism slows down. You should lower calories in your dieting even if you are physically active. Do not try to lose weight fast. It will make you look a few years older because your skin will become loose and wrinkled. The older you become, the slower you should lose weight. Your goal at this age is to lose no more than 4-5 pounds a month. An ideal diet for you consists of vegetables because you will not have 'hunger attacks' and swaying in your weight. Also, you should add regular exercise, massage and skin care that improves skin elasticity.
Do not plan exercises on your dieting day.
Here is an example of a vegetable diet:
Breakfast: mix oatmeal and corn flakes; add low fat milk and 1 grated carrot.
Brunch: 1 cucumber.
Lunch: 2 boiled potatoes (with the skin still on them) with a lot of vegetable salad (you can use any vegetables)
Snack: 1 red sweet paprika.
Dinner: vegetable salad and 1 piece of rye bread.
You are 40 - 50 years old.
Almost every woman over 40 has weight problems. Your muscular mass decreases and fat increases because of hormonal changes. You should eat most of your food in the first half of the day and have very light and early dinners. You should get no more fat than 30% of your daily ration. Choose vegetable oils. Eat fish and sea food regularly.
In this age range your body starts retaining fluid. An ideal diet for you is a rice diet because it will help you to maintain a healthy fluid level in your body.
Here is an example of a rice diet:
Boil 8 oz of rice and divide it into 3 portions. 2 of them will be combined with additional protein components.
Breakfast: boiled rice with 1 low fat yogurt and 1 tea spoon of honey.
Lunch: boiled rice and 5 oz of fish or chicken.
Dinner: rice with steamed vegetables and 1 tea spoon of vegetable oil.
Do not add salt because it will lead to retaining fluid in your body. You can add soy because it will help with 'hunger attacks'.
For snack you can eat a fruit or 3 oz of low fat cottage cheese.
You are 50 - 60 years old.
If you are over 50, you need less energy (about 30%) than somebody who is 20 years old. Eat 4-5 small portions a day. Do not over eat because it is harmful to your health. Limit your daily ration of salt to ¼ tea spoon a day. Sometimes you can fast, but do not do it often because in this age range your body loses its strength to fight illnesses.
The most effective substances 'killing' fat are enzymes. Pineapple and papaya are very rich in enzymes and vitamin C.
Here is an example of a diet for you:
Eat during the day about 4 -5 pounds of pineapple and papaya (or choose just one), including the pulp and juice. Divide these 4-5 pounds into 3 portions: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Do not eat anything else this day. If this diet is too strict for you, try this one:
Breakfast: 1 slice of pineapple and 3 oz of low fat cottage cheese.
Lunch: a half of pineapple and 3 oz of boiled chicken or fish or low fat meat.
Dinner: 1 slice of pineapple and 1 piece of rye bread with 1 piece of low fat cheese.
Also, powerful 'fat-killers' are kiwis, apple cider vinegar and artichokes (and the water left from boiling artichokes)
You are over 60 years old.
Your muscular mass in this age range is about 15% of your body. That is why if you want to lose weight, you should do it very slowly because fast diets decrease the amount of protein in your muscular mass.
The main rule is to eat no more than 40 g of fat a day.
Here are some examples:
Breakfast: 1 slice of bread with 1 tea spoon of low fat yogurt.
Lunch: instead of 1.5 oz of ground meat choose 1.5 oz of red beans. You will get an optical illusion of meat, but 7g less fat. If you can't live without meat, eat low fat beef instead of pork chop. You will get 13 g less fat.
Snack: instead of cake, choose a piece of fruit pie (minus 13 g of fat).
Dinner: instead of salami choose a piece of ham (minus 10 g of fat). With a piece of 30% fat cheese you get 10 g less fat compare to 60% fat cheese.
Drink no less than 2 L of water. It will support your digestion and metabolism.

10 Healthiest Foods on Earth

10 Healthiest Foods on Earth

By Danny Mitchell Ashton

Over the years, changes in the general composition of food have changed, even the natural ones. Some foods can be good for your health and some are not. To live a healthy life, you must know what foods are good for you. Here is a list of some of the best and healthiest foods on earth:

1. Cow's Milk

Milk is one of the major sources of calcium that helps build strong bones and teeth. It regulates muscle contraction and makes your blood flow normally. It is also a source for vitamin D and vitamin K which make your bones healthy. Milk from grass-fed cows contains a lot of fatty acids called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) which prevents cancer. This should, however, not be a substitute for breast milk among newborns.

2. Egg

A chicken's egg contains carotenoids in the form of lutein and zeaxathin which are good for the eyes. Egg yolks contain long-chain omega-3 fatty acids called docosahexaenoic acids (DHA), which are good for the brain and eyes, and arachidonic acid, which makes your skin healthy. Egg yolks are good for your heart and when eaten raw, it increases stamina and resistance to health.

3. Coconut Juice

Juice from coconut is rich in minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, manganese and magnesium. Its high potassium content, which is two times higher than that of a banana, prevents high blood pressure.

4. Tomato

Many consider tomato as a vegetable but it is actually a fruit. Tomato consists of lycopene which is a powerful anti-oxidant. Lycopene has been considered a potential agent for preventing different types of cancers, particularly prostate cancer. No other fruits have higher concentration of lycopene except tomato.

5. Winter squash

The yellow-orange flesh of a winter squash consists of plenty of nutrients such as vitamins A, B12, B3, B6 and C, and important minerals such as manganese, potassium, fiber and folic acid. It is also an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It prevents high cholesterol in the blood to keep our heart in a healthy condition.

6. Bitter Gourd

A tropically grown vegetable is one of the healthiest foods on earth, and the bitter gourd is one of the best. It has many therapeutic uses and can be used as a dietary supplement. Its protein extract helps people who suffer from diabetes. It has a significant effect of lowering blood sugar. It controls cholesterol levels and strengthens the immune system. Above all, it works as an anti-inflammatory agent and purifies the blood.

7. Ginger

Ginger is a healing herb which has been used for many centuries. It has many medicinal benefits. It absorbs toxins and acid in the stomach and neutralizes them. Ginger ale relieves coughs and sore throat and alleviates indigestion.

8. Beans

Beans are a good source of protein and fiber t. Some raw beans are toxic and should be boiled for several minutes to eliminate toxins. Beans can be cooked in any way, but they still taste amazing nonetheless.

9. Royal Jelly

This natural secretion help keeps your skin healthy and look younger. It also helps in cholesterol level imbalances and general diseases. It boosts energy and improves fertility, too.

10. Fish

Fish meat contains a high source of omega 3 fatty acids which keeps our heart healthy. It also improves brain function.

Winter Foods in Pakistan Are Exotic

Winter Foods in Pakistan Are Exotic

By Lynne Evans

Winter time in Pakistan means different food items in the shops and for me this is very exciting. I have recently come across a vegetable called "chung" which, in its raw state, looks like a small cactus without the spines. It grows to about 6 inches and is a dark green colour with nodes along its skin where, if it were a cactus, spines would be. I have tried to discover its botanical name but without much success. It is a bitter plant, and tastes a little like karalla or the bitter melon, and is best cooked with meat, minced beef seems to be the best. It has to be rubbed in salt before it is cooked to take away some of the bitterness, although a neighbour took a piece or two and ate them raw, as he did when he found them on the mountains when he was a boy. They are used traditionally to purify the blood and as a general tonic.

The other new vegetable for me is the "mongray" which is the whole seed pod of the mooli or Daikon radish. They taste like Kachnar buds and are good when cooked with beef too.

Fenugreek leaves are in season now so we cook them with spinach and with meat, as they are full of iron and have antioxidant properties. It's marvelous when something that tastes so good is healthy too.

In the fruit line there are dried "amlook" or date-plums, which are supposed to be the lotus fruit which made Odysseus and his men forget their dreams of returning home to Ithaca in Greece after the Trojan Wars. They are very sweet and in the raw form look like small black persimmons.

Autumn meant that there were ber fruit or the Indian jujube, which has a unique taste and to me they smell a little like hops, and I can't quite manage to eat one. There were also persimmons which were much more palatable. Unfortunately this sweet variety cannot be exported because it is so thin-skinned, but it is much sweeter than the varieties I have sampled in Europe.

Shareefa is another delightful fruit, the custard apple, or at least a variety of custard apple. These got their name because they were so adored by the Mogul emperors and only they were allowed to eat them. These days, few ordinary Pakistanis eat them as they are still comparatively expensive and so are not normally bought for families.

The red carrots have also come into their own so we can eat carrot halva and a spicy, sweet carrot conserve which is wonderful with natural yoghurt.

The itinerant sellers in the bazaar have brought sandalwood prayer beads and frankincense to burn, so these have been interesting too. Clearly the frankincense is of a low grade, as it looks like an ordinary stone, but it crumbles and makes the house smell wonderful when it is burned.

I have been in Pakistan for over two years now, but there is always something new to experience and clearly the food we get in the West which is sold as Indian or Pakistani is not the same as that which is actually eaten on the subcontinent as the fresh fruit and vegetables cannot be easily transported. We miss out on jamun (which are a little like damsons) and those delicious persimmons.

How To Stockpile Food For Survival Of An Economic Collapse

How To Stockpile Food For Survival Of An Economic Collapse

By Mike Kuykendall

If you want to learn how to stockpile food to guarantee survival after an economic collapse, there is a lot of information on the web about what to do. However, most of that information comes from the people who would sell you the food for your stockpile.

The bad news is that the marketing efforts of "Survival Foods" companies have been so pervasive and successful that they have affected the way people think. They have created a need and molded peoples' thinking about the solution.

The fact is that if you want to stockpile food, you won't get very far unless you are willing to spend quite a lot of money. Survival food is expensive, although the price goes down when the quantity you buy goes up.

The food stockpile that you wish you had will do you no good in an economic collapse; only the food that you have actually completed stockpiling will help you.

For this reason, it is critical that you start a food stockpiling plan that is economical and easy to do. Otherwise, you are defeated before you start and you end up doing nothing.

The first step to stockpiling food is to just double up on all the non-perishable foods that you buy each week. Your pantry should grow until in 6 weeks, you have an extra six weeks worth of food.

For the perishable items, especially once your freezer is overflowing, substitute non-perishable replacements. For instance, dry milk stored for your stockpile can be bought alongside the gallon of milk you use this week. Canned veggies can be put up to match your frozen veggies.

If you do this, you will be farther ahead than 80% of Americans who are not stockpiling food. The money that is sitting in your pantry in the form of food will appreciate at 5-10%, which is the rate of food inflation, and that is a great investment.

While you're at it, consider that an economic collapse will mean that you need to be prepared for more than just eating. Lessons from other major countries who have experienced economic collapse teach us that rolling blackouts, power outages and civil unrest are common.

So plan for a crisis when you are either in the dark or stranded away from home for a day or two unable to get back.

By the way, do you want to discover the 3 steps you can take RIGHT NOW to prepare for a power outage? If so, download my free MP3 HERE.

And to learn what 5 things you should always have in your car, you can go HERE.

Burn Fat With Green Coffee Bean Max

By Dave Tigan Morley

After being featured on various television shows worldwide, Green Coffee Bean Max has gained a lot of following among health buffs today, for a very good reason. Medical professionals have vouched for the product's safe and effective fat burning capability. This review intends to show you what the product is and what makes it tick.

The Green Coffee Bean
It is somewhat of yellowish brown color, and has very potent antioxidant qualities similar to green tea and grape seed extract. The beans contain polyphenols that help eliminate free radicals from the body as it facilitates easy and smooth bowel movements. On the other hand, the chlorogenic acid content helps the liver efficiently process fatty acids. This process is necessary for safe and effective weight loss.
The coffee bean's natural antioxidants make up for the loss of the free radicals. Most natural weight loss dietary supplements today contain antioxidants. The difference lies in how natural and how pure they are, and this is where "Max" has the advantage over similar diet supplements in the market.

Health Benefits of the Product
Although the supplement is popular for use as a weight loss alternative, it provides a lot of other health benefits, to wit:

It speeds up your metabolism. - The product alters the body's glucose absorption process. The caffeic acid ingredient in the "Max" acts as the stimulant that boosts the body's energy levels. The fact that the beans were not boiled contributes to the absence of cafestol, a diterpene that is known to increase the levels of bad cholesterol. Bad cholesterol, in turn, is responsible for weight gain.
It helps reduce blood pressure. - The chlorogenic acids in the product help prevent high blood pressure. This is according to recent studies made where hypertensive people were made to take the supplement. At the end of the testing period, the participants showed remarkable improvement in their blood pressure levels.
It has anti-aging properties. - The chlorogenic acid in the "Max" is very effective as an antioxidant. It is responsible for fighting off free radicals. If left on their own, free radicals will attack the healthy cells, thereby accelerating the process of aging. By effectively eliminating free radicals before they can wreak havoc, the body is better able to distribute oxygen.

Why Use the Product for Weight Loss?
There are many good reasons why the product is ideal for weight loss. These include:
It does not come with harmful side effects.
It is recommended and approved by majority in the medical profession because of its many health benefits.
It naturally cleanses the body by promoting smooth bowel movements.

Conclusion

Green Coffee Bean Max is generally considered to be a safe, fast, and effective way to lose unwanted pounds. However, just like other dietary supplements, caution must be observed by pregnant or lactating women, and kids, when taking the product. Consultation with a doctor is highly recommended for such conditions. In addition, to be sure that you are getting only the original product, buy only from the product's official website.

Green coffee bean for weight loss is recommended by many experts, visit www.greencoffeebeanmax.net to learn more about this supplement.

Finding A Wedding Buffet Caterer

Finding A Wedding Buffet Caterer

By Sherry Ann Smith

One of the most expensive aspects of a wedding is the food that will be served at the reception. It is very easy to end up spending more on wedding reception food alone than you have budgeted for your entire wedding. Carefully planning and hiring a good wedding buffet caterer can save you a lot of money by providing you with an exact figure on what your wedding reception is going to cost you.

You may be able to save even more money by renting a reception venue that offers its own wedding buffet caterer. However, this option does not always offer the best price; you can do a lot better. Be sure to shop around for the best price and get the price quote in writing before you hire a caterer.

Remember that it is your wedding and you can choose the food to serve your guests. You do not necessarily have to offer some kind of heavy meal at the reception. If you merely want to offer tasty treats, that is your wedding planning prerogative. Make sure to communicate your preference with your wedding buffet caterer.

While wedding buffet caterers tend to be the cheapest and have the most predictable prices, you should not rule out getting price quotes from others. Ultimately, if the food is good, it is not going to matter what the style or meal type is.

If you are planning on serving alcohol, expect your meal to cost at least twice as much and watch out for unexpected costs resulting from unpredictable guests. You might do better financially to have your caterer serve a full line of fine fruit juices.

Do not be afraid to let the caterer know that you will be shopping around for competitive quotes. If you already have a few quotes with you, ask for a better quote from each. You can save a lot of money on a wedding buffet caterer if you really want to save money.

If you are looking for a buffet caterer for your wedding, business meetings, private meetings, and other events, visit ECCServices.co.uk.

The History of Kona Coffee

The History of Kona Coffee

By Eli D Hart

Kona Coffee: The Beginning

The Coffee Arabica plant was initially introduced to Hawaii from Brazil when the Governor of Oahu, Chief Boki, brought it back from Rio de Janeiro on a return trip from Europe.

The tree was then brought over to Kona by Reverend Samuel Ruggles in 1828. He initially planted it for aesthetic purposes, but was surprised to see how well it grew. It thrived from the very beginning, making it evident just how perfect Kona was for growing coffee. The warm summer rains, calm winds, and rich volcanic soil allowed the crop to take hold quickly in Kona.

Kona farms began to expand and gain fame in the mid 1800's, with the main market being the whalers and sailors who stopped at Hawaiian ports. On his 1866 trip through Kona, Mark Twain said, "I think Kona coffee has a richer flavor than any other, be it grown where it may." This glowing praise set the stage for the coffee's meteoric rise.

The Struggle For Success

While it may have flourished at first, Kona hasn't always had it easy over the last 150 years. Invasive pests, devastating droughts, and market drops have come close to destroying the coffee industry in Hawaii. The first trouble came in the 1860's when the whaling trade collapsed, destroying its primary market. Simultaneously, sugar cane prices sky rocketed and most investors abandoned coffee for the much more lucrative sugar industry.

However, in the 1890's the world coffee market exploded and Kona experienced its first coffee boom. Thousands of Japanese immigrants were brought in to work the coffee plantations and over three million trees were planted. Sadly, this success was short lived. In 1899 the world market crashed due to over supply and the coffee industry teetered on the edge of extinction.

Hope came again in 1916 with the start of World War I as the US army bought up large shares of coffee to help sustain the troops. Production slumped with the Great Depression, but WWII once again revived the market. Thankfully, the 1950's brought a more global market for Kona coffee as tourism in Hawaii surged. The identification of Kona coffee as a high quality global commodity helped ensure the continual survival of the brand.

Kona Coffee Today

Today, about 700 Kona farms, consisting of an estimated 3,000 acres of trees, grow 18 millions pounds of raw coffee a year. Roasted Kona coffee sells for about $25 dollars a pound and brings in roughly $30 million to Kona's farmers each year. Production has increased over the past decade with the growth of global recognition of the quality of 100% Kona Coffee. However, despite recent prosperity, Kona farmers are facing many obstacles in the future.

Many companies have tried to piggy back on this success by creating coffee "blends" or "mixes." These often have only a small percentage of real Kona coffee, and use the popularity of the brand to increase sales, while degrading the quality of the brand.

Even worse, some sellers have been found completely counterfeiting Kona coffee. These shady marketers re-label South American coffee as 100% Kona coffee and sell it to the unsuspecting public. This is devastating to Kona's industry, which relies on its reputation for high quality.

More worrisome, in 2010 a coffee borer beetle infestation was discovered in Kona. This beetle destroys the bean of the coffee plant, and can ruin up to 90% of a coffee crop. Hawaii has enacted a quarantine on raw coffee to prevent the spread of the beetle, and farmers are working to minimize the damage the beetle does. Some farmers have seen immense damage from this new pest, and the Kona crop could be devastated in future years. Hopefully, with the cooperation of Kona farmers, damage by the beetle can be minimized and Kona coffee will be safe for many more generations.

Eli Hart. Kona Coffee Reviewed.

Kona coffee is a world famous commodity, highly regarded for it's amazing flavor and quality. It's history, development, and success is a fascinating story that's a testament to the hard work of the farmers in the small area of Hawaii known as Kona.

The Best Shops in New York City to Get a Great Cup of Coffee

The Best Shops in New York City to Get a Great Cup of Coffee

By Steven Alexander

Just a few years ago, New York City was better known for the coffee at cheap diners or bakeries than at specialty coffee shops. But alas, amongst the midst of a major recession while Starbucks was closing locations left and right, boutique coffee shops with expert baristas started popping up all over town. This trend is continuing to hold strong, with new places opening up quite often.

At the moment, here are some of the top cups of coffee to be had in all of New York City.

Abraco is my favorite cup of coffee in all of Manhattan without a doubt. The owner at this place is hilarious and clearly constantly pepped up from the power and smoothness of this cup of joe. The olive oil loaf here is also legendary.

One of my favorites is La Colombe Torrefaction. This coffee shop is originally based out of Philly, and I am glad they decided to expand. There are few iced coffees I would rather have than this one on a hot summer day.

Located on the border of the Lower East Side and East Village is Bluebird Coffee Shop. Just less than a year ago, this place was home to the short lived Simon Sips, which just did not have the magic that Bluebird has. If you are traveling to New York anytime soon and happen to find yourself touring the Lower East Side, make a stop at Bluebird.

A coffee shop that has been getting a ton of great press recently is the new establishment Blue Bottle Coffee in Brooklyn. This place is an offshoot of the San Francisco chain, and we are glad they decided to come over to the East coast. This place is fantastic.

When I want a strong cup of coffee to keep me awake all day, I go to the Mud Truck. You can't miss this big orange truck parked daily at Astor Place. This stuff is really strong, so be careful if you are sensitive to good coffee.

Once winter comes around, I will probably have to make another list, as my taste changes when I have hot cups of coffee.

In addition to writing about coffee and New York City culture, this author writes about products like the TechCraft TV stand and TV floor stand.

Effects of Global Warming on Agriculture and Food Supply

Effects of Global Warming on Agriculture and Food Supply

By Christophe Catesson

For a long time it has been believed that the effects of global warming on agriculture and food supply is going to be a positive one. This is because the rising level of carbon-dioxide resulted for global warming will help the greeneries for photosynthesis.

Thus there will be a rise of agricultural production and food supply. The theorem received a boost after the evidence of a sharp rise of barley production as one of the effects of global warming in Iceland which was quite impossible even few years ago.

But more recent experiments and researches have revealed that the effects of global warming on agriculture and food supply are not that good after all. AN UNEP 2001 report on the global warming has predicted that USA is going to have more droughts, floods, landslides and storms.

Winter will gradually be shortened and sobered down, while summer will rise in expansion and severity. Along with this heavy rain, big storm, heavy snowfall, high sea level, increasing coastal erosion and other problems will occur.

Though as one of the effects of global warming, the overall food supply and production level is supposed to rise in USA, but the Great Plains will suffer with more droughts resulting for global warming.

Even now many effects of global warming on agriculture and food supply have been perceived. The popular maple syrup production of North east USA has diminished by 10%, moving its production zone to farther north for shorter and warmer winter.

On the other hand as one of the effects of global warming the south west USA is suffering from a water shortage which will increase in coming days. The zone has become dry for any standard agricultural production with an apprehension of resettling Dust Bowl of 1930s’ by the year 2030 for global warming.

Following a report of IPCC on the global warming, California’s snow covered Sierra Mountains can reduce in near future by up to 60-90%. This will create dire water shortage in summer, making the Central Valley area unsuitable for agricultural production for global warming. The State University of Colorado has declared that the area is going to be less productive due to effects of global warming on agriculture and food supply.

As the effects of global warming, the food supply production in Florida is going to suffer a lot due to frequent and large scale floods. Also one of the most profitable agricultural products of USA – corn will suffer a bad condition due to dry and hot atmosphere for global warming.

As another example of the effects of global warming on agriculture and food supply - with the rise of temperature by 3 to 11 degrees in this century, the production rate of the main crops – the rice, corn, wheat, barley, soybeans and sorghum – will be cut down by 3-5% for each point rise of temperature for global warming.

However with all these effects of global warming on agriculture and food supply, new attempts have been made to adjust the agricultural and food production method according to the changing atmosphere. So to fight the effects of global warming, the researchers have established new methods of production with continuous revision of models. But still the best possible process to reduce the effects of global warming on agriculture and food supply is to be established.

What You Should Eat After Your Workout - Post Workout Nutrition

By Melissa Wall

You just finished a super tough workout at the gym and your starving! Its time to head home and grab something to eat, but what's the best thing to eat post workout? Your post-workout nutrition and meal is one of the most important meals of the day, what you eat here can either make or break your fitness goals.
The two important things to keep in mind when you are planning to eat after a workout: 1) When you eat and 2) WHAT you eat. These two things together, if done the right way, will help you build muscle and lose fat.
1) When Should I Eat After my Workout?
The first meal after a workout should be eaten at least 30 to 60 minutes after your workout. If you wait any longer to have your post workout meal, your body will start to store the food as fat instead of going immediately into the muscle.
The timing of this meal determines how effectively the nutrients will be absorbed directly into the muscle. The less time you wait the faster the nutrients are absorb and the glycogen in your body is restored.
The longer you wait to eat after a workout, you begin to starve your muscles and the effects of your workout become less.
2) What should I Eat After my Workout?
Each meal after a workout needs to consist of both protein and carbohydrates. Your fitness goals are, will determine the proportion of each of these components. For example, if you want to lose weight, you will need to have more protein than carbohydrates, to make sure that you are building muscle and losing fat.
The one thing you want to stay away from is fat. Healthy fats are a great source of nutrition, however, when it comes to post workout nutrition, fats do not help you. Instead, fats slow down the digestion process, which in turns, slows down the absorption of nutrients into the muscles.
Some great examples of post workout meals include: a whey protein shake with some fruit - either mixed quickly in a shaker cup or mixed in a blender, grilled chicken breast with some brown rice, or egg whites with oatmeal.
Remember, that what you eat after your workout is one of the most important factors in helping you reach your fitness goals and get the flat abs you've always wanted.

3 Simple and Healthy Breakfast Recipes

By Jeff Hopeck

The most common reason for skipping breakfast or eating a high-fat breakfast is the lack of knowing how to eat healthier. For example, if I laid out an entire eating plan for you and all you had to do is follow it, life would be great. Sometimes it's not that simple, so here are 3 healthy breakfast ideas for you to get you started:
1. Granola and Fat Free Yogurt - My personal favorite! It's simple, tasty, and very healthy. Start off by getting Fat-Free plain yogurt and your choice of granola. Personally, I look for either high fiber, flaxseed added, or both. Once you have the ingredients, the recipe is simple. All you do is fill your bowl with yogurt and sprinkle a handful of granola on top. For additional great flavor, add fresh fruit!
One simple bowl can give you up to 25% of your entire day's recommended protein. The best part- you won't feel hungry after eating this healthy breakfast choice and the fiber and protein will give you that added "pep in your step" to make it through your day.
2. Fruitty Butter Shake - An excellent source of protein and a great way to start your day- not to mention one of the tastiest shakes you will ever eat! Put all or some of these ingredients into the blender: 10-15 blueberries, 5 strawberries, 2 tablespoons peanut butter, 1 teaspoon flaxseed, 3 tablespoons plain fat free yogurt. These are my favorites, please add or subtract to suite your needs.
This shake does wonders for your energy level and gets you through the day, feeling like you are literally on cruise control!
3. Veggie Shooter! - Everything you can imagine a protein shake being, and more! All you need is an open mind for this one, and get ready to watch your energy levels take off. Again, get the blender out and mix these ingredients: Squeeze 1/2 lemon into the blender and 1 full cup of water, then add chopped celery, cucumber, fresh spinach, carrots, and parsley. Liquify and enjoy!
I like to drink this 1 or 2 times per week. This ensures I am getting the necessary amounts of potassium, magnesium, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C. Another benefit of this shake: you won't get that "full" feeling of a lead ball in your stomach, yet your body will be satisfied for the next few hours!

How to Make a Simple and Healthy Pasta Sauce

How to Make a Simple and Healthy Pasta Sauce

By Ryan Letterman

Not all of us have the privilege of being Italian. It seems every Italian has the secret to making a tasty tomato sauce. Being one myself, of course I have several sauces up my sleeve. But not everyone has time to spend on a sauce that takes hours to prepare.

Simmering a sauce to perfection takes time. Time comes to a standstill while you wait for the sauce to reach the just the right consistency. But when you're hungry, who has the time to wait? With a few simple household ingredients, I can teach you how to make a fresh garden sauce that's takes less than 30 minutes to make.

To make this tasty pasta sauce all you need is four basic ingredients:

- 1 bunch cherry tomatoes

- 1 small yellow onion

- 1 clove garlic

- 2-3 TBSP olive oil

Start by heating a medium-sized skillet over medium heat. Drizzle the pan with olive oil and turn the pan about to evenly coat the bottom. Turn down the heat under the skillet a bit. While the olive oil is slowly heating, cut up your vegetables.

Grab the cherry tomatoes and a cutting board. Slice the tomatoes into quarters and set them aside. Don't squeeze out any of the seeds or extra juices. This is going to add a lot of flavor and nutrition to your sauce.

Dice up the onion. Now your olive oil should be the right temperature to add the tomatoes and onions. Be sure the pan is not so hot that it burns the onions.

Grab a hold of the largest clove of garlic you can lay your hands on. If you have no garlic, a few sprinkles of garlic powder will suffice, though it really isn't as good as the real thing. If you did find the garlic, put it on the cutting board and give it a good press with the flat side of a knife. Mince the smashed garlic finely and add it to the sauce.

Many other vegetables make a great addition to this fresh sauce. Zucchini, squash, olives, bell peppers, or even spinach can really add another dimension to the texture and taste of the sauce. I use the hot red peppers my grandfather grows. Those things are dangerously hot, but you can substitute crushed red pepper flakes out of a jar to stay on the safe side.

Mix up all the vegetables in the frying pan. They need a good coating of olive oil to cook properly. Now comes the waiting. Every few minutes, come back and check on your sauce.

The tomatoes take only a few minutes to wilt - wilting takes place as the juice seeps out. After ten minutes, the onions will be translucent and the tomatoes amorphous. Once you have stirred the sauce, always remember to put the lid back on the skillet. Condensation will keep the liquids from drying up thus burning the sauce.

Once the onions are tender and it looks like you've got a real sauce going, remove the lid. Simmer the sauce on medium for a few minutes to heat up and congeal the parts of the sauce that are too watery. By the way, never add water to tomato sauce. The goal is to reduce and thicken the juices.

Now throw your favorite pasta in a huge pot of boiling salted water, get out the colander and you are almost ready to eat. Put some parmigiano reggiano cheese on top of the pasta and sauce and place a slice or two of garlic bread on your plate. This sauce will definitely bring out the Italiano in you even if there really isn't any. You will never buy another jar of pasta sauce.

Organic Chicken - The Perfectly Versatile Meal Choice

Organic Chicken - The Perfectly Versatile Meal Choice

By Zoe D Robinson

There is more than one reason why chicken is a key ingredient in a huge variety of dishes in wildly different cuisines around the world. If you worry about eating too much red meat, you find it too expensive, or you do not like the taste, chicken is a really good alternative. Chicken is lower in saturated fat and cholesterol than red meat, and a better source of protein than vegetarian alternatives such as beans, plus it is usually significantly cheaper than red meat and other white meats such as pork. On top of all of this though, chicken has to be one of the most flexible ingredients readily available to us in the British Isles.

Everything from curries, breaded drumsticks, barbecues, and roasts to stews, soups, pies, or fajitas lend themselves at least as much to chicken as other meats, but it is much easier and more common to use chicken in salads, sandwiches, and to dress it up like in chicken Kiev, coq au vin, bacon wrapped chicken breast or peanut satay skewers. Whatever kind of food you are making, and sauce or marinade that you are using - Chinese, French, Cajun, Mexican - chicken is easily adaptable, very tasty, and a smart choice to use. It lends itself perfectly to any number of global flavours.

Chicken probably already is one of the staples of your regular diet for just these reasons. But if you are buying chicken for the health benefits or the taste, it pays to go one step further and buy organic chicken. As well as chicken's natural virtues, organic chicken is free from antibiotics and growth hormones, it is only fed on organic feed and has to be free range and cleanly kept.

As well as being more humane this limits the chances of disease; happier, less-stressed animals, and animals not kept in cramped and dirty conditions are less prone to illness and disease, which is especially important in organic animals since they are not filled with a steady supply of antibiotics. Producers of organic chicken have to consider renewable resources and conservation, so it is more environmentally friendly. The taste is noticeably superior to poorer quality chickens. You and your family cannot fail to enjoy the full flavour and texture of the poultry, but you will enjoy it all the more knowing that it is purer and not harmful to your body, and better for the environment too.

Writing about organic produce, Zoe Robinson aims to provide readers with informative knowledge into her experience gained within this area and offer readers the chance to view a website she has experienced positively. View a range of organic chicken today.

Eating the Paleo Way! 3 Things to Avoid, 3 Things to Do!

Eating the Paleo Way! 3 Things to Avoid, 3 Things to Do!

By Judy Mazurin

The Paleolithic Diet is a contemporary nutritional approach that imitates the eating habits of humans who lived in the Paleolithic era. It is also known as The Caveman Diet, Hunter-Gatherer or Stone Age Diet as this specific era was populated by cavemen, hunters and gatherers. The diet consists of mainly raw meat, vegetables, fruits, fungi, nuts and root crops. There is very little cooking, food processing or preservatives included in this diet.

The Paleo Diet is maybe the most controversial health diet as of today because it promises the health benefits enjoyed by humans in the Paleolithic era. At the same time, it also stirs doubts about the safety of the people who practice eating raw foods which might be contaminated with bacteria and other germs that can cause a multitude of diseases. There are 3 things to avoid and 3 things to do before beginning your Diet.

3 Things to Avoid:

1. Reading myths and wrong assumptions about the Paleo Diet.

Because of its popularity, myths about this specific diet are circulating primarily in the cyber world. You will read myths like this diet curing cancer, prolonging life span and increasing libido. However, none of these were proven to be true.

2. Eating the Diet before you are ready.

Instantly subscribing to this diet has its dangers. You can get diseases from raw meats and other foods suggested by this diet. Instead of having a better health, you may feel worse if precautions in preparing and cleaning foods are not taken into consideration.

3. Associating the Paleo diet with instant good health.

Having better health requires discipline and perseverance. You will not experience immediate better health, just because you have started a new "miracle" diet.

3 Things to Do:

1. Know if Paleo Diet is suitable for you.

How? Consult a health coach. Health coaches help people determine their metabolic type and the diet suitable for them. They also help promote the overall wellness, health plan and lifestyle of the individual. Health Coaches advocate for optimal health. Interested? Try The Art of Good Health. Contact me to understand how health coaching will help you enjoy better health and healthy living. Don't be afraid to sign up. The first 30-minute session is free.

2. Do your own research on what really is the Paleo Diet.

Knowing what diet will help you know if you should practice it or not. Understanding how a diet works inside out will prevent future problems like suffering from side affects you never knew or anticipated.

3. Look for another diet suitable for you.

The Paleo diet will not be appropriate for everyone. You should have a Plan B if that's the case. Let me, your Health Coach help you in the process and you will ensure that you are doing the correct eating plan that is right for you.

Easy Cake Decorating Ideas for Children

Easy Cake Decorating Ideas for Children

By Larissa Vinci

The cake is one of the most traditional parts of any child's birthday. Butter cream frosting and cheerful colors can turn simple cakes into treats worthy of a celebration. If you want to surprise your kids, learn how to make cookie balloons, candied lemons, and edible roses. From cupcakes and easy to use toppings to sugar blossom flowers and marzipan, there are many ways to decorate a cake for children.

Try these cake decorating ideas to sweeten your child's next birthday:

Make Marzipan Roses

Marzipan roses can make any cake look spectacular. These edible decorations can be used on cookies, cakes, and other iced baked desserts. Use a flower-shaped cutter to make the marzipan and then wrap disks of marzipan around the cone. For each rosebud, take three hazelnut sized balls of marzipan and one twice as large. Place them between two sheets of cellophane. Roll the large petal into a spiral shape to form the centre of the rose. Lay the smaller petals around the centre over the seam. Allow the roses to dry slightly before putting them on the cake.

Use Colored Butter

If you are preparing a two- or three-tier cake, add colored butter for an added visual effect. Instead of adding color using artificial food dyes, take the time to make homemade colored butter. Let your children pick the palette.

Make a Princess Castle Cake

Surprise your little princess with a castle cake for her birthday. The more towers, the more difficult the cake will be. You can prepare the towers several weeks in advance. If this is the first time when you are making a castle cake, start with a seven- or five-tower cake. You can use rose icing color, candies, butter cream icing, and sprays of fondant flowers.

Add Candy and Cookies

Incorporate your children's favorite cookies into the birthday cake decorations. You can make a zoo-themed cake and decorate it with animal crackers. Candies are versatile cake decorations too. The results look professional, and no pastry chef is required.

Animal Birthday Cake Ideas

If your child loves animals, you can surprise him with a special cake. Animals often serve as the theme for children's birthday parties. You can make farm animal cakes, ladybug cakes, butterfly cakes, owl birthday cakes, and even monkey cakes. Use candies or icing fie the eyes and nose accents. Add editable paper images, candy-coated bugs, chocolate chips, and peanuts.

There are many unique cake decorating ideas that can turn any dessert into a work of art. Whether you are planning an anniversary, a cocktail party, or a wedding, you can use the most spectacular cake decorating techniques to surprise your guests.
